Meet Betsy Hughes By David Lias david.lias@plaintalk.net Vermillion High School tennis coach Betsy Hughes battled, with others Friday afternoon, the high winds that buffeted both players and spectators at the Vermillion Benefit Tennis Tournament, held at the University of South Dakota tennis courts east of the DakotaDome. Betsy, who is employed by the Vermillion School District as a counselor at the middle school, has completed coaching two seasons of both Tanager boys’ and girls’ tennis. “Our goals this year have been to think positive, to learn, and to develop a winning attitude when you’re in a situation when, as a team from a smaller school, you’re going against teams from larger schools and sometimes you’re playing against people who play tennis all year long,” she said. Betsy noted that there are so few high school teams in South Dakota that they all play in one division. “So, we’re going to play Sioux Falls Washington, we’re going to play Sioux Falls Lincoln. We’re going to play the toughest teams, and we’re going to play some schools that are our More Bang for Your Buck! Consider it... size, too,” she said. Her approach is not to focus so much on the opponent, but rather have her athletes concentrate on the game. “We work on trying to develop a winning attitude, and bring that to the game,” Betsy said. “The kids love it.” She became familiar with the sport by playing it in high school and college. “I’ve been kind of dusting off my memories of back then, and reacquainting myself with the strategies and the practice drills that we need to do,” Betsy said. She has also discovered that being a tennis coach can be just as enjoyable as being a player of the sport. “It’s fun. It’s a wonderful way to interact with kids. As a counselor, I work with kids and I’m always trying to teach them certain skills,” Betsy said. “The Vermillion kids who are active in tennis are motivated, and motivation is part of what you’re trying to teach them to use when they approach different challenges. “The skills they learn mentally in tennis transfer for them to use everywhere else,” she said. “It’s just a wonderful point of connection and growth.” WANTED Buying all types of SCRAP IRON Farm Machinery • Cars & Trucks References Available • Top Market Prices Paid Home: 402-945-1512 • Cell: 402-533-3640 K&K Iron & Metal Sold!
