Big screen for Nebraska game! 1101 Meet Darla Hamm By David Lias david.lias@plaintalk.net At the start of every school year, Darla Hamm feels blessed to be in her current position as principal of St. Agnes School. “It’s an exciting time. I know that myself, along with the staff, feels very blessed to be able to work at a Catholic school,” she said. “We’re very passionate about what we do – not only educating our students, but educating them in their faith and helping them to be good Christians who will go out and make a difference in this world, and make the choices to take care of not only themselves but everyone around them.” Adding to that excitement is the Campaign for St. Agnes, which was kicked off publicly during an open house on the school grounds Sept. 11. The goal of the campaign is to raise funds to complete improvements in four areas of the St. Agnes Parish: the school, adult education, its two cemeteries, and the parish rectory. St. Agnes School, which was built 50 years ago and is straining to meet the needs of a growing enrollment, is the top priority of the campaign. No definite construction schedule for the school improvements has been formulated yet, but St. Agnes parishioners are hopeful that a successful campaign will allow the planned upgrades to the school to be made soon. “I feel like it is our mission to be where we are,” Darla said. “It’s exciting that we’ve grown so much and we have the opportunity to be here when there is going to be this big expansion and change. “I love being at St. Agnes. There are people KNUTSON FAMILY DENTISTRY Dr. Richard Knutson Dr. Matthew Knutson Dental Excellence for Children & Adults Cosmetic • Implants General Practice •Single Visit Crowns Braces For Adults & Children •Invisalign HOURS: who are so supportive of the school and the church and they go above and beyond,” she said. “That’s why this will be a success. We have so many people in our parish who are so giving and generous and thoughtful.” Darla is currently in her 12th year as a member of the St. Agnes School staff. During her first four years at the school, she taught first grade; she then taught pre-school for two years before being hired in her current administrative role. Darla is in her sixth years as serving as the school’s principal. She grew up in Byers, CO, a small town located about 30 miles east of Denver, and earned her bachelor’s degree at Regis University, a Jesuit university in Denver. “I earned my elementary education certification there,” she said. “In 2000, my husband and I moved to Vermillion.” During their first year in Vermillion, Darla worked as a substitute teacher for the Vermillion School District. She also enrolled in the Professional Development Center (PDC) at the University of South Dakota and Announcements Events BERGEN LUTHERAN Church: “The little white church on Timber Road.” Worship 9:00 a.m. Sunday School 10:15 a.m. Pastor Ralph Egbert Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, 995 N. After accepting her current administrative position at St. Agnes School, she returned to USD and received a degree in preschool through 12th grade administration in 2010. “I can’t believe this is already my sixth year (as principal),” she said. “You are just so busy; there are so many things that you do all day long. I guess the refreshing part about being an administrator is that every day is different, and every day has many different challenges and opportunities. “I really like interacting with students, and helping them learn and grow,” Darla said. “The nice thing about being in administration is I’m with them for so many years, and I really get to watch them grow up and change in so many different ways.” Darla and her husband, John, have been married 11 years, and are parents of Austin, a fourth-grader, and twins Aidan and Hailey, first graders who all attend St. Agnes. “It’s nice having them here at school,” Darla said. “I’m passionate about Catholic education and love that we can talk about our faith all day long, and can relate the decisions that we make and the choices that we make with our faith life, on top of providing an academic education.” Concordia Lutheran Church (LC-MS) 7 South University Street, Vermillion.
