Meet Krissy
Zalud
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
The first time Krissy
Zalud picked up a baton,
she became hooked.
While growing up in
Vermillion, she was
fascinated when seeing
young women in parades
or at football games
performing their twirling
routines.
“What I loved about it
is it just looked so
interesting; I was
fascinated from the first
moment I saw a baton
twirler,” Krissy said, “and
I went to the fall Park and
Rec signup, and they let
kids try the baton, and I
picked up one up and did
a trick and I was hooked.
From that moment, I
wanted to learn more and
develop my skills.”
Today, Krissy, a 2012
graduate of Vermillion
High School, is a medical
biology major at the
University of South
Dakota. She is also the
feature twirler for the
SOUND OF USD
Marching Band.
“I started twirling
baton when I was 6 years
old. There was another
baton twirler who lived
here, Heather Reeves,
who had a little group
going, and she twirled at
the high school and at the
university, and I knew
that’s exactly what I
wanted to do,” Krissy
said.
She discovered, while a
member of Heather
Reeves’ group, “Heather’s
Highsteppers,” that baton
twirling, a very public
activity, had a positive
side benefit. It helped her
overcome the shyness she
often battled during her
childhood.
“I was very bashful as
a child, but my
determination helped me
overcome how shy I was,

just because I loved it so
much and I loved
furthering my abilities,”
Krissy said. “The moment
I got to a contest and I
got my first trophy, I
thought, ‘this is how I
want to spend my free
time right now.’“
Twirling also provided
life lessons in discipline,
and in striving to meet a
goal.
“My parents taught me
how important it is to be
dedicated to your
passions, and I really
learned the value of hard
work,” she said. “I’ve
really valued all of the
wonderful opportunities
that have come through
baton twirling – all of the
friends that I’ve made, all
of the places that I’ve
been to, and I’ve just
enjoyed bettering myself
as an athlete and
becoming a national
champion.
“It’s been an amazing
journey,” Krissy said.
Today, she shares the
positive benefits of
twirling with a younger
generation of girls in the
Vermillion community.
“I run my own

business,

Twirling Group, and I
teach group lessons every
week in addition to
private lessons,” Krissy
said. “I have some girls
going to a contest this
weekend. I’m trying to
get twirling going in the
community again, and it’s
just so much fun to be
part of their (students)
lives, and help them
develop the skills and to
have the experiences that
I got to have.
“It’s such a confidence
builder, and it’s just so
much fun. It’s the best
sport out there, I think,
but I’m a little bit biased,”
she said, laughing.
Much of her approach
to life – from her studies

at
USD and her
performances with the
SOUND, to her
instruction of a younger
generation of twirlers in
the Vermillion
community – is based on
a quote from Eleanor
Roosevelt: “The future
belongs to those who
believe in the beauty of
their dreams.”
“I guess I’ve always
kept my dreams inside.
I’ve never lost that vision.
It’s just important to keep
it close to your heart and
think about it every day,”
Krissy said. “That’s how I
live my life when it comes
to school, becoming a
doctor, or when it comes
to being involved in
different organizations on
campus and in my
sorority.
“You just have to have
your priorities, and do
what you love, because
then it’s easy to stay
involved in it,” she said.

Krissy
contributed her twirling
talents to performances
of the VHS Marching
Band while attending
high school here, and
successfully made the
transition to collegiate
twirling after enrolling at
USD.
“I absolutely love
twirling for the SOUND
OF USD,” she said. “It’s
an excellent band, and I
think that we bring a lot
of energy to the field. I
think it’s so wonderful to
be part of a college band.
It’s a really talented group
of musicians, and it really
is an honor to be in their
numbers.
I just have so much
fun, and it’s definitely
one of the highlights of
my life,” Krissy said. “I’m
glad that this – collegiate
twirling – has been an
option for me … and this
is really an exciting time
of my life.”
