Many Vermillionites, particularly students and faculty on the University of South Dakota campus, were disappointed when Julie Madden decided more than a year ago to move from Vermillion to Rapid City. She had won a large following on the University of South Dakota campus, thanks to her warm hospitality as “the coffee lady” at the Al Neuharth Media Center. She tended a coffee bar located in the building’s atrium and became a hit with students and faculty alike. Julie once again is calling Vermillion home, and today, she’s brightening up a corner of downtown Vermillion, specifically, her new employer, BBQ Blues, located at 5 Market Street. “I moved to Rapid City for a year to help my son and daughter-in-law with my grandson,” she said. “But my heart is here in Vermillion, and I just had to come back home, so I returned.” One of Julie’s good friends is also friends with Denny and Kathy Kainrath, the owners of BBQ Blues. “He knew they were looking for help, and he knew I was looking for a job, so he connected us,” Julie said. “So, now I work here, and I love it. It’s great – it’s a great atmosphere. Everything that we make here is from scratch – all of the sides, the desserts, the sauces.” In fact, before she took a short break early Friday afternoon, she had just popped a made-fromscratch batch of bread pudding into the oven.
