Meet Jon
Brooks
By David Lias

So much is familiar. So
much is new, too.
Jon Brooks is thankful
to be able to return to his
hometown of Vermillion,
and roam the halls of the
community’s elementary
and middle schools in his
job as a teacher for the
Vermillion School District.
Jon is also in his first
year as head coach of the
Vermillion Tanagers girls’
basketball team, so he’s
spending afternoons and
evenings in the high school
gymnasium. Again, it’s a
familiar place – Jon
graduated from VHS in
2003.
The surroundings may
be familiar, but there’s
plenty of fresh, new things
going on, he said, to keep
his various jobs exciting
and challenging.
After graduating from
VHS, Jon studied for two
years at the University of
Sioux Falls, but returned to
Vermillion to complete his
studies at the University of
South Dakota with a
degree in elementary
education and a minor in

coaching.
His first job was at
South Sioux City, NE,
where he taught and
coached football and girls’
basketball for four years.
This fall, he began
employment with the
Vermillion School District.
“I teach middle school
computers – sixth, seventh
and eighth graders,” Jon
said. “And I also have a first
grade class that I teach
every day at the end of the
school day, so I have first
graders, middle school kids
and high school kids.
“I get to see a lot of
different personalities
during the day,” he said,
laughing.
Jon added that he was
excited to have the
opportunity to pursue a
career in education in his
hometown.
“When this job opened
up, I was ready to jump at
it right away, and I’m very
fortunate and happy that it
all worked out,” he said.
Jon’s late afternoons and
evenings are occupied with
coaching the Tanager girls’
team. The young athletes’
season debut is tonight
(Tuesday, Dec. 10), with an

“Coming into this,
obviously I didn’t know
many of the girls, but we’re
turning that into a
positive,” he said. “If things
haven’t gone the way
they’ve wanted them to in
the past, this is a fresh start
for them. This is their
chance to start over,
everybody is starting at
square one. We just told
them to come in and work
hard, and you’ll fall into

“The kids have done a

about the beginning of the
year, everything is new –
offenses, defensives – so it’s
definitely a transition
period for them. They’re
also learning a whole new

Life for Jon has been
filled with new adventures
recently, too, and not just
in the workplace. He and
his wife, Amber, who have
settled in Vermillion,
recently became new
parents.
“We just had our first
child; we had a little girl
named Brytten, and she’s
just over five months old,”
he said.
