So much is new, too. Jon Brooks is thankful to be able to return to his hometown of Vermillion, and roam the halls of the community’s elementary and middle schools in his job as a teacher for the Vermillion School District. Jon is also in his first year as head coach of the Vermillion Tanagers girls’ basketball team, so he’s spending afternoons and evenings in the high school gymnasium. Again, it’s a familiar place – Jon graduated from VHS in 2003. The surroundings may be familiar, but there’s plenty of fresh, new things going on, he said, to keep his various jobs exciting and challenging. After graduating from VHS, Jon studied for two years at the University of Sioux Falls, but returned to Vermillion to complete his studies at the University of South Dakota with a degree in elementary education and a minor in BRULE Creek Lutheran Church, Elk Point, SD: Worship Service 11:00am, Sunday School 9:45am to 10:45am. coaching. His first job was at South Sioux City, NE, where he taught and coached football and girls’ basketball for four years. This fall, he began employment with the Vermillion School District. “I teach middle school computers – sixth, seventh and eighth graders,” Jon said. “And I also have a first grade class that I teach every day at the end of the school day, so I have first graders, middle school kids and high school kids. “I get to see a lot of different personalities during the day,” he said, laughing. Jon added that he was excited to have the opportunity to pursue a career in education in his hometown. “When this job opened up, I was ready to jump at it right away, and I’m very fortunate and happy that it all worked out,” he said. Jon’s late afternoons and evenings are occupied with coaching the Tanager girls’ team.
