He was presented with this award at the South Dakota Association of Secondary School Principals Conference. Jason began teaching physical science and biology at Vermillion High School in in 1999, while continuing studies to be certified as a school administrator. “I got my certification for (the job of) secondary principal from USD,” he said. “I got a master’s degree from Southwest State in Minnesota, and I got my secondary certification from USD.” Jason began full-time duties as Vermillion High School’s athletic director and assistant principal/dean of students approximately a decade ago. “I did a little bit of that in 2002,” he said, “and it was full-fledged athletic director and assistant principal in 2003. “I really enjoy working with kids, the students, and helping them reach their potential. I like to help kids that might need a little bit of extra help being motivated and earning that degree,” Jason said. “It’s rewarding to help kids eventually get that high school diploma, which is super important. There are some kids who don’t have the confidence, or don’t think they can do that, and helping guide those kids to get that accomplished is the thing I enjoy the most about my job.” The Vermillion School District and the high school also provide a great learning environment, he said. “We have a great staff here, and working with the staff here is really easy and fun, and it makes that process go a lot easier,” Jason said.
