Broadcaster Press 07 February 4, 2014 www.broadcasteronline.com Governor seeks interns for summer term PIERRE – Gov. Dennis Daugaard is currently seeking applications for two summer 2014 Governor’s Office Internships in Pierre. The positions will be paid and run from May to September 2014. Governor’s Office interns have the opportunity to work at the highest level of state government, learning about and preparing legislation to be introduced in the next legislative session. Interns’ duties will depend on interests and strengths. Typical duties will include aiding the governor’s general counsel, conducting policy research, preparing policy briefings and staffing the governor, lieutenant governor and first lady. The positions are open to all undergraduate or graduate-level students. Preference will be given to South Dakota residents attending South Dakota colleges or universities. Students who are interested in receiving credit should also apply. The governor’s staff is open to working with individual universities and professors to secure credit for the internship program. Interested students should submit a resume, cover letter and two letters of recommendation by March 1, via e-mail, to Patrick.Weber@state.sd.us. For more information on duties or logistics, visit http://sd.gov/governor/In ternship or contact Patrick Weber at Patrick.Weber@state.sd.us or (605) 773-5999. District 17 Legislative notes By Rep. Nancy Rasmussen District 17 One of the highlights of last week’s session was meeting two Viborg FFA Leaders. Kirsten Stevens, District 3 vice-president and Jaclynn Knutson, District 3 state advisor attended the District Officer Training event held in Pierre. A legislative breakfast was provided for us that allowed the House and Senate members the opportunity to hear from our future leaders. It was my honor to listen and observe the talent and commitment of these SDFFA high school students. This week Ivy Sherard from Hurley will join me and the House of Representatives to take part in the Legislative Page Program. This is an opportunity for high school seniors to experience South Dakota’s government at work. Thank you, Ivy! Congresswoman Kristi Noem addressed both Houses last Wednesday to give updates on the forthcoming farm bill, disaster funding for west river ranchers, school lunch reforms and funding for the Lewis & Clark Water Systems. When It Legislation voted on the House floor last week varied from repealing the inheritance and estate tax (HB 1057), reducing penalty taxes paid on aircraft (HB 1042), establishing customer protection services (HB 1054), to recognizing Hot Springs as “The Veterans Town” (HCR 1004). The House will hear two Senate Bills this week addressing Common Core Standards (SB 62 and SB 64). Other bills considered on this week’s calendar will be listed for us on Tuesday. I will update you next week. Keep safe and warm!
