The smell of paint was
in the air at W. H. Over
Museum last week as the
finishing touches were
placed on a studentdesigned exhibit.
Greg Preheim of Irene
lent his talents as an
artist to the project by
painting a prairie sky of a
scene that displays
various animals of the
plains, including a
buffalo.
“I think it’s going to
look OK,” Preheim said
of his work Friday. “It’s
going to look better than
just a plain white wall.”
The exhibit was one of
three designed by
students from the
University of South
Dakota and was funded
by Vermillion’s Lions
Club.
Maxine Johnson, head
of the museum’s board of
directors, brought
Preheim on as muralist.
“Several people had
looked into murals being
painted and everything,
and then I read in the
P&D about his painting a
mural outside Yesterday’s
Café, so I just wrote to
him to get a bid,”
Johnson said.
“It was such a nice
letter I couldn’t refuse,”
Preheim said.
“He came in one day
and said, ‘Just show me
where you want it,’ and
we came back here and I
told him what we
wanted,” Johnson said.
Preheim agreed to do
the mural for cost.
“It’s an $800 project
that I’m sure would cost
us $10,000 minimum for
something of that size, so
I’m really, really thrilled
about it,” Johnson said.
This isn’t the first time
Hello!
Greg Preheim takes care not to drip paint on a buffalo in an
exhibit at the W. H. Over Museum as he works on a mural.
Preheim has left his mark
in museums – his work
can be seen in Viborg and
Freeman – but the
project did offer some
complications that he
hasn’t encountered
before.
The main one is that
the exhibit was already
on display when he began
painting on April 30, so
he must take care not to
drip on any of the
taxidermy animals that
populate the space.
The buffalo in
particular shows the
precautions he has taken,
with a plastic drop cloth
draped across its back.
“I’ve got to keep that
buffalo covered up so he
doesn’t get speckled,”
Preheim said.
There also is no room

for a scaffold, so Preheim
worked with an ordinary
aluminum ladder, which
he moved from side to
side as he changed
position.
“I think the biggest
job for him is moving
that ladder and
(avoiding) the bison,”
Johnson said. “He
worried about the grass
(in the exhibit), but I said
we could get more
because it’s everywhere,
so I’m not worried about
that.”
Johnson thanked
Preheim for his efforts
and for what the addition
of his mural will mean
for future visitors to the
museum.
“It’s here forever,” she
said.
