Berry is interim VP
of research
The University of South
Dakota announced today
that Mary Berry, Ph.D., will
serve as interim vice
president of research
effective June 23 following
the retirement of Laura
Jenski, Ph.D.
Berry, a member of the
USD faculty since 1990,
serves as director of Photo
Active Nanoscale Systems
(PANS) and director of
South Dakota Integrative
Graduate Education and
Research Traineeship (SD
IGERT). For more than a
decade, she was chair of the
Department of Chemistry
and has been a professor of
chemistry at USD since
2001.
“Research is crucial to
the mission of the
University of South Dakota
and I am honored for the
opportunity
to assist the
Office of
Research
and
Sponsored
Programs in
this period
of
Berry
transition,”
Berry said.
Berry joined the
department of chemistry
faculty at USD in 1990 as
an assistant professor after
serving as a postdoctoral
associate at the University
of Pennsylvania. While at
USD, she has been
recognized for her
outstanding research,
including the President’s
Award for Excellence in
Research in 2012 and the
Award for Academic
Innovation and Excellence
in 2005.
Additionally, she was a
visiting scholar at the
University of Victoria
(Canada), the University of
California at Los Angeles
and at Argonne National
Laboratories. Berry earned
a Ph.D. in physical
chemistry from the
University of Virginia and a
B.S. in chemistry from the
College of Charleston.
“We are fortunate to
have Dr. Berry in this
position to serve as interim
vice president,” stated USD
President James W. Abbott.
“Her credentials and
outstanding reputation will
provide a steady direction
for the university while we
identify the next long term
leader for the university’s
research mission.”

Gov. Dennis Daugaard told Girls State delegates Friday that South Dakota offers jobs in
the fields of engineering, information technology, accounting, the health fields and in
skilled trades. He urged them to seek post secondary education in those areas to seek a
successful career path in South Dakota.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard
had some advice for the
high-schoolers attending
this year’s American
Legion Auxiliary South
Dakota Girls State.
Get a technical degree.
“If you don’t get
anything else out of what
I say today, get this,” he
told the audience Friday
morning at Aalfs
Auditorium on the USD
campus. “It used to be
that if you got a four-year
degree at a college, you’d
have a pretty good ticket
to success. That is no
longer true. Wake up.”
Rather than get just
any degree, Daugaard
suggested the girls seek a
degree in one of the
technical fields.
“In South Dakota
particularly, the demands
that we’re seeing are in
the sciences, engineering,
information technology,
accounting, the health
fields and in the skilled
trades, machining,
welding, construction
trades, manufacturing
trades,” he said.
There are both twoyear and four-year
degrees in these fields that
yield “spectacular job
opportunities,” the
governor said.
“The right degree is
the ticket to lots of job
opportunities, but there
are many degrees for
which there is little
opportunity at the end of
your college path,”
Daugaard said. “What you
do have at the end of that
path is a load of student
debt and no way to pay it
back, or much (difficulty)
in paying it back. …
“I’m not saying you
shouldn’t follow your
dreams,” he said. “If
you’ve got your heart set
on being a philosopher
and you’re going to get a
degree in philosophy, God
bless you. Have at it. But
know that at the end of
that … four-year road, it’s
very difficult to get a job.”
While there are many
good degrees, there are
many others “that lead to
virtually no
opportunities,” he said.
Daugaard said that
while “more young people
than ever” are attending
college, when they earn
their degrees, the jobs
they end up getting are
often no better than those
they could have gotten
right out of high school.
“Be thoughtful about
that, because now is the
time you’re going to be
making those decisions,”
Daugaard said. “Inform
yourself about where the
demand is for job
creation or job
opportunities in South
Dakota, and in the
nation.”
The governor
encouraged the girls to
visit with people who
currently have the jobs
they are considering.
He also told them to
visit SDMyLife.com, an
online program assisting
students with navigating
the career development
process.
“If you dive down into
that … site, it will help
you see where the job
opportunities are, and
where they aren’t,” the
governor said.
Daugaard
congratulated all of the
girls who were chosen to
attend Girls State this
year.
“It is a testament to
your hard work and
dedication that your
auxiliary chose you to
represent (them) here,” he
said.
