06/01/14 02:56 – Caller
reported loud music coming
from a trailer. Officer
checked the area but could
not hear any music.
06/01/14 03:09 – Union
County sheriff requested
officers contact subjects at
the hospital and take
statements regarding a
possible domestic. Officers
completed the task.
06/02/14 08:14 – Caller
requested help locating a
developmentally disabled
individual who had
wandered away from the
caregiver. Officers located the
individual and reunited him
with his caregiver.
06/02/14 08:44 – Caller
reported finding a 3-year-old
who they did not know
playing with her child. While
trying to determine whom
the child belonged to, a car
drove by with a woman
looking for her child who
had wandered away from her
yard. The two were reunited.
06/02/14 11:27 – Officers
responded to a 911 hang-up
call. Officers found there had
been a dispute between two
sisters regarding a financial
issue that had resulted in the
one telling the other to leave
and threatening to call the
police when she refused. The
sister left after 911 was called.
The caller hung up the
phone. No crime had
occurred.
06/02/14 21:23 – Officers
responded to an accident
where a car had hit a parked
car. The caller reported the
driver was huffing from a can
when the accident occurred.
Officers found the driver of
the offending vehicle parked
and the driver had a can of
Dust-off and was huffing off
the can until the officer took
it away from her. She was
unable to answer simple
questions and was arrested
for DWI, ingestion and no
insurance.
06/03/14 06:51 – Caller
reported a highly intoxicated
man walking on the side of
road and asked if officers
could check on him. An
officer contacted the man,
who was very intoxicated and
had trouble walking without
assistance. The man was
several blocks from home
and had no one to call to
assist him. Officers were
concerned he could not
make it home without falling
and hurting himself and
decided to provide a ride
home.
06/03/14 10:00 – Caller
reported that unknown
person(s) had used her social
security number to file taxes
in 2014. The caller had taken
all the necessary steps to
protect herself and start an
investigation by the IRS.
06/03/14 10:43 – A
counselor requested a welfare
check on an individual after
receiving a disturbing text
message. The subject was
located and stated she had
not planned to harm herself
but was upset about family
legal difficulties.
06/03/14 11:33 – A
convenience store reported a
theft of an item from the
store. Complainant reported
a man came in and left with
an item without paying for it.
As part of the investigation,
the officer contacted the
suspect who stated he had
forgotten to pay for the item
and would return and pay for
it.
06/04/14 10:41 – Caller
reported a woman in a public
park huffing. Officers
responded and found the
woman in physical control of
a motor vehicle huffing off a
can of dust-off cleaner.
Officers had to physically
stop the woman from
huffing. She was arrested for
ingestion and DWI.
06/05/14 00:54 – While
on patrol, officer found a
skid loader on fire. The fire
department was contacted
and extinguished the fire.
Cause of the fire is under
investigation.
06/06/14 11:43 – Caller
requested a welfare check on
her husband, who was
intoxicated and made a
statement that could be
construed as suicidal.
Officers contacted the man
and interviewed him. He
appeared in good spirits and
did not intend to hurt
himself.
06/06/14 16:11 – Caller
requested help with a
domestic assault situation.
Officers responded and
investigation resulted in
probable cause that one party
had assault the other, the
suspect was arrested.
06/06/14 22:58 – Caller
reported a domestic
argument occurring at a
neighbor’s home. Officers
found that there had been an
argument between a man
and woman who had been in
a domestic relationship.
There was a current court
order prohibiting the man
from contacting the woman.
He was charged with
violating the order.
06/07/14 02:16 – Caller
called 911 and stated that the
police were needed near a
local bar and then hung up.
Officers responded but
found nothing amiss in the
area. Officers tracked the
phone and contacted the
caller. Caller said she had
called after getting a text
message from a girl friend
needing help with a male
following her. Officers
contacted the girl friend who
verified the story, and said
the man had left her alone
eventually and she had
gotten home.
06/07/14 07:44 – Caller
requested officers check on
his brother after his brother
had sent a disturbing text
message to a mutual friend.
Officers contacted the
brother who had been
drinking last night and
claimed he did not
remember sending a text
message. The brother
appeared to be healthy, and
denied any desire or plan to
hurt himself.
06/07/14 15:46 – Caller
reported a man was beating a
dog and requested officers
stop the abuse. Officers
located the reported offender
and contacted him. He had
hit his dog after finding it
had torn up the driver’s seat
while he was in a store.
Officers educated the man on
changing laws in South
Dakota regarding abuse of
animals. No criminal
offenses had occurred.

Avenue Historic Districts
at 7 p.m., Thursday, June
19, at the fellowship
room of the UCC
Church, 226 East Main in
Vermillion. The meeting
is sponsored by the Clay
County Historic
Preservation

Commission, a unit of
county government.
The Vermillion
Historic District covers
much of the residential
area between the USD
campus and Main Street
and the Forrest Avenue
Historic District is
comprised primarily of
the residential area along
Forest Avenue.
Presentations at the
meeting will be made by
Jim Wilson, chair of the
Clay County Historic
Preservation
Commission, Farrel
Christensen, code and
zoning administrator of
the City of Vermillion
and Liz Amlie of the
State Office of Historic
Preservation.
Such items as the
meaning of historic
district designation,
zoning issues and
incentives for
enhancement of historic
districts will be
discussed.
