The best way to say goodbye By Alan Dale alan.dale@plaintalk.net When readers of the The Plain Talk and Broadcaster Press peruse this I would have been wrapping up my first month – give or take – in Vermillion. For the record, I have loved it. It doesn’t take long to see how educated, proud, and classy the people of this fine small city are and what you represent for Midwestern America. Kudos. On that note I have a confession to make, one that comes from deep within my being. It was hard for me to leave my last stop in Butte, Montana, because it had become a home I adored. The people were kind, appreciative, and they took me in as almost an honorary Butte boy. So, yes, it was hard to leave there. Yet, I told a few people about my last 36 hours in Butte and about their overwhelming kindness in those waning times in the Mining City. The Vermillion folks I spoke to told me I could easily expect the same here. That came as no surprise since literally EVERY person I have met has been nothing but kind and fun to talk to, even if only for a minute. I have decided to tell you my story of what happened those final 36 hours… In the first weeks of July I was offered the job here to become the new general manager/managing editor/sports go-to guy at The Plain Talk and Broadcaster Press. The offer gave me the opportunity to take my game to another level. I have never doubted my ability to rise in the profession and have twice-fold known that I would never stop bettering myself. So, I accepted. For the next few weeks I was able to spend quality time seeing the people I would leave behind, the sources that made my very busy job so much easier. I had time to say goodbye to my athletes, my coaches, my parents –yes, I say my because it was my responsibility to take care of them with my words in our paper. It was great. I also had the opportunity to take the two-plus weeks to wrap up at my job, write some, hopefully, solid final pieces, and go out on a high note. Then all heck broke loose. On the second-to-last night before I left Butte, my wallet got stolen. No ID, no credit cards, no nothing. No U-Haul yet and 1,000 miles to go. Yeah, that stunk. Then the town of Butte rallied around me. First the police officer who took my report was as AWESOME (I really do have to cap that because he really was) as one could be. He calmed my slight panic, told me the ins and outs of driving with a non-expired license, and got me settled a bit. Then U-Haul told me that only ‘the local’ office could determine if they would allow me to rent a truck without ID. I called the office at 7 p.m. thinking they’d be out and I just hoped to leave a message. The lady who runs the store answered the call from a wedding dinner rehearsal and despite her need to be with her son heard me out and within 30 seconds said: “Everything is OK…we will take care of it. We will take care of you.” Finally, with no money, no food (all packed up), I went to a grocery store with hat in hand and explained my dilemma. I was told I could write a check with no ID. “That’s OK Mr. Dale, we will take care of it.” I am not ashamed to admit it, but I began to cry – almost like really happy ending movie cry, cry. For two years I gave my heart and soul to Butte because every time I did something right they would share their gratitude. Thankfully, my good majorly outweighed my bad, which I heard about as well. The point is, I worked harder for people who I was doing right by, and they were the best people I have ever known since I left Chicago where I grew up. Then I heard that the fine people of Vermillion would probably step up as well in the same situation. That wouldn’t shock me. As I wrap this I want to tell you all that you may have seen me hobknobbing around town and telling you to please come to me with anything regarding The Plain Talk and Broadcaster under my watch. I have also been specific in my requests to come forward quicker with criticism than compliment. We need to get better despite my confidence that what we have produced these last few weeks is unprecedented for our publication. We can’t get better if you don’t tell us what we do wrong. While our new staff gets brought in and settled we will continue to add to what we have already done. We will work hard and then work harder to give you what you deserve. Maybe one day I will cry inside Hy-Vee. I just hope it’s not because my wallet was stolen…but because Vermillion has stolen my heart. Here’s hoping… GUBBELS SALVAGE Wanted: • Old Cars • RV Motorhomes • Farm Machinery • Irrigation Systems • Any Type of Scrap Iron • Grain Bin Removal Paying Top Dollar Will Pick Up 1-402-640-6335 bp Since 1934 Towing Service & Skid Loader Work.
