CLAY COUNTY SHERIFFS REPORT
SUNDAY, APRIL 19
10:04 a.m. - A man called to
report a vehicle was stuck on a
minimum maintenance road. A
deputy responded to the area
and called the vehicle owner who
advised she was going to remove
the vehicle later in the day. A few
hours later a deputy checked on
the area and discovered that the
vehicle had been removed.
11:03 a.m. - A rural resident
reported that he had received
a phone call from an unknown
person who told him that his family
was involved in a tragic accident.
The man recognized this as a
likely scam attempt, hung up the
phone, and called his family who
advised that they were all okay
and had not been in an accident.
A deputy called the out of state
phone number back and no one
would answer or return the phone
call.
6:51 p.m. - A deputy arrested
a man at a Vermillion residence
who had an outstanding Clay
County warrant.
MONDAY, APRIL 20
2:38 p.m. - A deputy transported an inmate to the medical clinic
for a scheduled appointment and
then back to jail.
TUESDAY, APRIL 21
8:36 a.m. - A woman received
a fraudulent phone call from a
man reporting to be with the IRS
threatening that she was going to
go to prison for tax evasion. The
woman did not disclose any of
her financial records but wished to
document the incident.
12:56 p.m. - An inmate was
transported to the medical clinic
for a scheduled appointment.
2:54 p.m. - A deputy transported an inmate to the medical
clinic for an appointment and then
back to the jail.
5:22 p.m. - A motorist reported
a large piece of debris on Highway 50. A deputy searched the
area but did not locate any debris
on the roadway.
5:34 p.m. - A Wakonda resident reported that her ex-boyfriend
damaged property in their house
prior to them breaking off their
relationship. The caller wanted
monetary compensation for the
damage. The incident is under
investigation.
7:19 p.m. - A deputy located
several calves in the road while
patrolling in rural Wakonda. The
owner was notified and the calves
were removed from the roadway.
7:59 p.m. - A rural resident
reported seeing a suspicious
vehicle parked in a field approach
for an extended period of time. A
deputy responded and discovered
that the vehicle had left the area.
The deputy patrolled the area but
did not locate anything out of the
ordinary.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22
8:09 a.m. - A caller reported
that a Burbank resident was
dumping ashes from his wood
burning stove onto the roadway.
A deputy spoke with the man and
informed him that disposing of
ashes in that matter was illegal.
The man apologized and agreed
to find an alternative way to dispose of the ashes.
8:38 p.m. - A rural resident
reported hearing an explosion
from her neighbors controlled
burn. A deputy responded to the
residence and spoke with the land
owner. The deputy was unable
to determine the source of the
explosion. The report has been
forwarded to the SD Department
of Environment and Natural Resources, who manages air quality
guidelines for open burning, to
review the case for any potential
violations.
9:55 p.m. - A deputy responded to a non-injury car vs
deer accident on SD Highway 50,
east of Vermillion.
THURSDAY, APRIL 23
6:57 a.m. - A deputy transported an inmate from the Sac County
Jail in Sac City, Iowa to the Clay
County Jail on an outstanding
Clay County warrant.
9:23 a.m. - A deputy transported an inmate to the medical
clinic for a scheduled appointment
and then back to the jail.
3:00 p.m. - An inmate at the
jail reported that money had been
stolen by another inmate from
inside his cell. A deputy is investigating the incident.
3:28 p.m. - A deputy transported an inmate to the medical clinic
for a scheduled appointment.
6:33 p.m. - Units from the
Sheriff’s Office, the Vermillion
Police Department, and the
Highway Patrol, as well as fire and
ambulance personal, responded
to an accident with injuries on the
Highway 50 Bypass.
9:28 p.m. - A man reported
witnessing a vehicle traveling 25
MPH on Highway 50. The caller
was concerned that the driver may

the Vermillion Police Department
with a dispute involving two roommates. Officers mediated the situation and kept the peace until an
agreement was reached between
the parties.
6:55 p.m. - Deputies arrested
a Vermillion man on an outstanding Clay County warrant.
