The idea just popped into my mind.” Taeli also did a pop-up heart for her Valentine’s Day box for school. “You just need to cut out different parts of it, you fold it, you glue it to the other piece of paper and the actual shape part sticks out,” she said. “I have a lot of experience with pop-out cards.” Taeli said no one gave her the idea on how to do that. “She’s really creative,” said Bailey. Students in an after-school art program learn Taeli and Bailey have a lot in common, includhow to create texture with watercolor and salt. ing rhyming names. SARAH WETZEL / FOR THE PLAIN TALK “We’re also neighbors, best friends, yeah it works out,” Bailey said. “I don’t know what I’m painting yet,” Bailey said. “I’m just putting colors on it. I usually copy Taeli but she doesn’t let me.” Bailey later decided to make her colors into a stage like one she enjoys dancing on. Taeli also did not start by painting anything in particular. “I have three colors BRULE TOWNSHIP PROPERTY OWNERS where it’s red and The Board of Supervisors will meet as a Board of yellow mixing and then I’m going to put a Equalization on Monday, March 16, 2015, 5:30 different color on the p.m. at the Union County Shop in Spink, SD. bottom,” she said. “It’s just colors.” A written request to appeal must be delivered to For many of the kids, their artistic inclinathe clerk’s office no later than Thursday, March tions extend beyond 12, 2015, 5:00 p.m.The request must include the the after-school program. parcel number. “I don’t really paint much but I like to draw fashion designs,” Gregg Hanson, Clerk 47568 SD Highway 50 Laiken said. Wednesdays, students in the after-school program have the opportunity to attend art classes from Beth Knedler, local artist and youth librarian. Last week the focus was on texture. “Texture is a feeling,” said Bailey, one of the art students. “Salt makes it look like bubbles in the picture or something.” Knedler was showing the students that if they sprinkle salt on their watercolor paintings before they dried and then brushing the salt off, it adds texture to their art. The kids have other ideas on ways you could show texture. “If you’re doing letters you could put a letter and then outline it and make it look like it’s popping out,” Bailey suggested. Or you could use the same technique with a different medium according to Kennadi. “You could use washable markers,” she said. “Sometimes when I draw with markers a little water comes out. You could just put some salt over that and it would look like the paint.” With the salt technique came lots of ideas for what to paint. “I’m painting a school from a show, Winx club,” said Laiken. “It’s about a bunch of fairies and there’s this club.  The salt makes it kind of look like spots all around it.” Several of the kids painted scenes that reflected their interests. “I just thought of something that was outside,” said Roz. “It’s a blue moon and the salt’s going to turn out to be snow on a hill.” “He’s more of an outside boy,” Laiken commented. Reagan also painted a hobby. “I was trying to make a basketball,” she said pointing to an orange and black circle. Reagan’s masterpiece portrayed a rainbow stretching between two Prices Good March 2-31 basketballs. The runny watercolors were proving hard to control for (Includes Prints & Solids) the black lines on the ball.   “I think I want to do a sunrise,” Kennadi said. “The salt will be either the ground or the rain.” Though Kennadi said she never wakes up early enough to see an actual sunrise, she feels she can accurately paint one. . “I just assume that it’s pink red and orange because I see it on movies and stuff,” she said. For some artists, ideas came after the painting was started. ? Smile.
