We have our weird struggles but we always have a good laugh about it at the same time.” Ramirez said she has always felt drawn to theater. “I’ve always been a storytelling from my earliest age and I’ve taken other jobs and professions but I’ve always come back to it,” she said. “Every time I do the response is always so positive. I thought I should probably take it seriously.” Land disputes between the United States and Native Americans is not as outdated an issue as people might think according to Ramirez. “We kind of cling to what land we have,” she said. “That’s what the play is about, what happens when a native national guardsman comes to a reservation of his nation and he is sent to calm a land claim that’s rising and they recognize him right away as Indian. They think he’s coming to protest and he says no.” Ramirez said the play is meant to be thoughtprovoking but not dark. “It’s kind of funny and it’s kind of not,” she said. “It’s kind of a statement about the native point of view versus contemporary By Sarah Wetzel For the Plain Talk USD Theater is teaming up with some very special guest artists to bring a unique theatrical production to the Knutson stage on campus this week. This Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Native Voices at the Autry and USD theater will present “Standoff at HWY #37,” a play by Vickie Ramirez dealing with an issue many Americans don’t believe exists anymore. “Stand-Off centers on Thomas Doxdater, a young National Guardsman of Tuscarora heritage who has to choose between upholding his oath to defend his country and protecting the traditional lands of his people,” said USD Theater Interm-Chair Rai Genna. “We are incredibly fortunate and thrilled to have members of Native Voices at the Autry join our students and faculty in mounting this engaging production.” “It’s kind of a comedy/drama and I hope the comedy lands,” said Ramirez, the play’s author. “It’s something very serious but people are allowed to Mark’s Machinery, Inc.
