we always have a good laugh
about it at the same time.”
Ramirez said she has
always felt drawn to theater.
“I’ve always been a

age and I’ve taken other jobs
and professions but I’ve
always come back to it,” she
said. “Every time I do the
response is always so
positive. I thought I should
probably take it seriously.”
Land disputes between
the United States and Native
Americans is not as
outdated an issue as people
might think according to
Ramirez.
“We kind of cling to what
land we have,” she said.
“That’s what the play is
about, what happens when a
native national guardsman
comes to a reservation of his
nation and he is sent to calm
a land claim that’s rising
and they recognize him
right away as Indian. They
think he’s coming to protest
and he says no.”
Ramirez said the play is
meant to be thoughtprovoking but not dark.
“It’s kind of funny and
it’s kind of not,” she said.

theater will present “Standoff at HWY #37,” a play by
Vickie Ramirez dealing with
an issue many Americans
don’t believe exists
anymore.
“Stand-Off centers on

protecting the traditional
lands of his people,” said
USD Theater Interm-Chair
Rai Genna. “We are
incredibly fortunate and
thrilled to have members of
Native Voices at the Autry
join our students and faculty
in mounting this engaging
production.”
“It’s kind of a
comedy/drama and I hope
the comedy lands,” said
Ramirez, the play’s author.
“It’s something very serious

American point of view,

A point of view, Ramirez
said, is not widely seen at
present.
“I think it’s important
for people to know because
they have no idea,” she said.
“When I first pitched this
story to the public, people
were like, ‘When did this
happen? Like in the 1800’s?’
And I said no, this happened
in the last ten years. It’s
current, let’s put it that
way.”
