Over Museum in Vermillion, South Dakota is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the city. According to a museum pamphlet, the museum is named after William Henry Over, who was a former curator of the museum. "Dr. Over was South Dakota's first published archaeologist and collector of natural, cultural, and historical artifacts," according to the pamphlet. The museum, which was founded in 1883, was initially created for academic use by science students at the University of South Dakota. "Today, the museum's collections include: rocks, minerals, botanical and biological (natural) specimens, fossils, photographs, works of art, archaeological artifacts, and items representative of the natural history, inhabitants, and the various ethnic groups who call South Dakota home," according to the pamphlet. The museum is very important to Maxine Johnson, who is the Friends of the Museum President, museum administrator, and a member of the Clay County Historical Society. "The W. H. Over Museum has been part of the local community since 1913, and its original appearance was in the Science Building in a Case of Natural History," said Johnson. W.H. Over traveled from Wisconsin to create a museum in Vermillion from specimens he kept in cardboard boxes. "The first appearance of these artifacts was in a glass case, and we have chosen to commemorate this beginning by preparing a glass display case of Over's three main interests: Native American artifacts, scientific discoveries and records of his research at USD, and the display of ethnic articles donated by families of early residents of this territory," said Johnson. Also found in this case are Over's notes and writing materials, according to Johnson. While the museum's locations have varied over the years, it has always made an important contribution to the Vermillion community and HELP WANTED Dispatcher/Logistics The W.H. "The museum has had several physical locations on the campus of USD: the Science building, Old Main, the basement of Slagle Hall, and the present quarters of the National Music Museum," said Johnson.
