USD HAS A DREAM
By Zach Wetzel
Forv the Plain Talk
During the week of
January 20th, the
University of South
Dakota will share the
dream of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. with the
world.
According to the
Center for Academic
Engagement on the USD
website, the annual
Martin Luther King
events serve a dual
purpose. The goal of
these events is to honor
Dr. King's achievements
but also to move his
work forward.
The website explained
that the activities will
allow volunteers and
participants to
remember Dr. King.
There will also be
opportunities for
reflection on the
important societal issues
that shape our growing
community.
Sarah Wittmuss,
director of the Center for
Academic & Global
Engagement, shed some
light on the enduring
tradition of celebrating
Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Day at USD.
"The best part of
Martin Luther King day
is that there is a time for
everyone to reflect on
how they can make a
difference," observed
Wittmuss.
The activities are open
to all who wish to
participate, with
particular emphasis on
the Yankton and
Vermillion communities.
Wittmuss clarified
that the Martin Luther
King activities are so
much more than a
campus event. The
Martin Luther King
activities at USD are
designed to bring the
campus and the
community together.
"Vermillion is more
than just a campus. It is
a community," Wittmuss
said.
Wittmuss outlined the
schedule for the event,
explaining that the
activities will take place
on January 19th and
20th. Monday, January
19th is the official date
for Martin Luther King
day.
According to the
Center for Academic
Engagement, check-in
for the events will begin
at noon on Monday the
19th in the Muenster
University Center
Ballroom. Service
projects will commence
at 1 p.m. and there will
be a re-orientation at 4.
On the 20th at 7 p.m.,
Negin Farsad will
address the University in
the MUC Ballroom.
Farsad's bio can be
found on the USD
website and at
neginfarsad.com. Farsad,
FARSAD
who directed the film
"The Muslims are
Coming!", uses social
justice comedy to help
people from different
nations and religions
relate to each other.
In addition to her film
and stand-up comedy
work, Farsad has
contributed as a writer,
actor, and director to
Comedy Central. She
was also a writer for
MTV and PBS.
According to
Wittmuss, the Martin
Luther King event has
been around for at least a
decade.
"In the past it's been
an entire day of service,"
Wittmuss said.
Around a hundred
people usually
participate in the
activities.
The Center for
Academic Engagement
usually chooses different
activities for each year.
In prior years a hunger
banquet was held on the
USD campus.
"This is a big event,"
said Wittmuss.
"Everyone is welcome to
attend."
The Martin Luther
King activities are
sponsored by the Center
for Academic
Engagement & Global
Engagement, the Center
for Diversity &
Community, the
Corporation for National
and Community Service,
the Alternative Week of
Off-Campus Learning
(AWOL), and the Vice
President for Student
Services.
Early sign-ups to
volunteer are
encouraged, and can be
accessed online on The
Center for Academic
Engagement's page at
usd.edu.
