By Sarah Wetzel For the Plain Talk High School German teacher Kami Dibley and students of the Vermillion High School German club came before the school board at their meeting Monday to present information on their upcoming Germany trip. The students will be traveling to Germany this summer leaving on May 21 and returning June 7. “It’s our second part of this exchange that we will be traveling to Germany for the German American Partnership program (GAP),” Dibley said. “Two years ago was the first part of the program. The wonderful thing about the GAP program is it’s an exchange program intended to go on long-term. When I became a part of it I really wanted to have Ratingen city, our sister city, as our partnership school.” According to Dibley, through GAP two schools match up and commit to a long-lasting partnership that build friendships that last over time. The experience is certainly immersive. “The students have to live individually with German families,” Dibley said. “They don’t get the comfort of having a couple of their buddies with them. That’s wonderful for language learning and practice. They have to attend school in the partner school for ten days.” The students also take one long weekend trip and several short-term day trips to cities around the Ratingen area. The program has grown in the short time VHS has been involved according to Dibley. “The last time we had five students,” she said. “That was our first time in Ratingen. I had to kind of twist their arm a little bit. We got to Germany and the school asked why we didn’t bring more. It’s one of those things that develops a life on its own. After we were there we met so many people, everyone was so welcoming that the German teacher set the limit at 15 students and they had to turn aside some students who wanted to come and I set that limit too. I had the same thing this year where we had more than 15 who wanted to come.” Students from the VHS German Club expressed their enthusiasm in anticipation for the upcoming trip. “One of the things I really look forward to this next time is really knowing what i’m going into and what i’ll be dealing with,” said one of the students who is going for the second time. “All that angst is out of my system and I can fully enjoy and embrace everything. I can go and see all the friends I made last time.” The students have kept in touch with their German peers, sending messages celebrating birthdays and the like. “There’s an app called ‘What’s app?’ where you basically text through an app,” Another student shared. “We used it a lot before the trip to get to know people and how to say their name. Afterwards, great having you here and stuff.” “I hosted Sabrina last year,” said another student. “I’m really excited to go back this summer because they’re super cool people. I’m probably most excited to go to school. The school system there is a lot different from American schools. There’s less electronic things. You’re not allowed to have your phone.” Another student shared his excitement to experience the educational system. “I’m excited about the school because they have three different schooling options,” he said. “One for trade jobs, one for white-collar jobs and one for higher med school and lawyering jobs. It’s interesting because it targets what you want to do.” One student will be attending for the first time. “I wasn’t in the program last year so I don’t personally know the Germans that were here last year but I see this as an opportunity to make some new friends and maybe have some fun in a foreign country,” he said. Another student is looking forward to the long weekend trip. “One of the weekends we’re going to be there we’re going to be taking a trip to the Eifel mountains,” he said. “I’m particularly excited for this trip because it’s on the border between France and Germany and the setting is a really cool mix between cultures there.” The students also remembered when they hosted the students from Germany. “When they were here last time we got to go on a trip to the Black Hills,” one student said. “We got to see Mt. Rushmore. It was beautiful and we went on trails. There was a cave with water in it, just beautiful. We got to spend so much time with the Germans and it was amazing, we got to know them so much in that time because we were just always with them.” Black Angus yearling purebread bulls for sale. Initially funded with federal grant money, Delta Dental of South Dakota is continuing the program on an ongoing basis as a new part of its mobile program. “Our Circle of Smiles program increased kids’ access to dental care and showed preventive care can help reduce costs,” said Scott Jones, CEO of Delta Dental of South Dakota. “When that makes kids’ lives better, it’s that much more important to do. We can’t just quit when the grant ends.” Funded by a $3.3 million grant from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Delta Dental worked with the nine Tribes in South UNION COUNTY, SD LAND AUCTION 160 +/- Acres, Civil Bend Township Dakota to hire and place oral health staff on the reservations between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2015. Jones said the primary goal of the program was to provide preventive care and education to children through age 9 before more painful problems and costly restorative care was needed. “Program staff provided care to 7,810 patients at 168 clinic locations and special events in schools, Head Start facilities, and other community locations,” he said. Dental hygienists provided cleanings, fluoride varnishes and applied dental sealants. Community oral health coordinators also provided education and ongoing contact to encourage good health habits and dental visits. All patients were referred to a dentist; those needing restorative care like fillings were provided assistance to get to the appointment. An analysis of claims data showed the program had notable impact in improving access to oral health care and reducing the average dental care costs per patient. The percentage of children through age 9 who’d had a dental visit increased 64% during the program. The percentage who’d had a cleaning or fluoride varnish increased more than 75%, and the percentage who’d had dental sealants doubled. Over the same period, the average dental care costs per child decreased by 27%. Delta Dental is continuing the work of the program and funding it by increasing funds to its charitable foundation. The effort will now become part of the company’s ongoing mobile program that has two mobile dental trucks that provide care to underserved kids across the state. And they may not eat well, or get enough sleep. Nearly all of that pain is preventable with brushing, flossing, and regular preventive dental care.” Consider it... Sold!
