Students selected will participate in information-gathering activities and receive hands-on learning, including a gross anatomy lab tour, certification in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), field trips to area medical facilities and group activities and discussions. Additionally, camp participants will interact with health care professionals, faculty and others relative to the pursuit of careers in health care. Applicants eligible to attend are students entering 10th through the 12th grades this fall. Staff advisers from the Sanford School of Medicine and the USD School of Health Sciences will also be available during the camp to discuss everything from education requirements to future employment opportunities and salaries. Sponsors for the 2016 Healthcare Careers Summer Camp are the Sanford Vermillion Medical Center, the Dakota Hospital Foundation, Sanford School of Medicine, the USD School of Health Sciences, Sanford Health, Delta Dental of South Dakota Foundation and the 7th District Medical Society. USD’s Healthcare Careers Summer Camp is open to students from South Dakota, northeast Nebraska, northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota. Tuition is $100 per student with meals, lodging and all educational and recreational activities provided. All applications require a counselor nomination, a parent or guardian signature, an official school transcript and a personal statement. "To quote the 4-H motto, we are hosting these sessions, "to make the best better,'" said Karla Trautman, SDSU Extension Associate Director. "These April Listening Sessions will allow us to review where we have been, where we are and have an engaging discussion about what stakeholders' want for the future of South Dakota 4-H youth development." Information collected from the April Listening Sessions will be used in developing SDSU Extension's 4-H Strategic Futures document. This 4-H Strategic Futures document is updated every 5 years and provides the priorities and vision SDSU Extension staff use to guide the development of 4-H programming. "If you are a 4-H member, parent, alumnus, volunteer or someone who serves on an SDSU Extension advisory group, county commissioners or you are involved in another youth-serving organization or serve as a leader of a fair - basically anyone who supports 4-H and has a vested interest in its future - we encourage you to attend a local listening session," said Trautman. Edith Siegrist Scholarships for Vermillion Middle School SummerCamps The Vermillion Public Schools Foundation has a number of summer camp scholarships available for Vermillion Middle School students. These summer camps, held in July, 2016, are through the University of South Dakota: the USD Governor's Camp, the Lawrence Brothers Science Camp, and the USD Summer Music Camp.
