Parkston’s Sydneys Still Motivated After Four State Titles
BY JAMES D. CIMBUREK
James.cimburek@yankton.net
For Parkston’s golfing
Sydney’s, Bormann and Weber, motivation hasn’t been
a problem. Not even after a
state title.
Or two.
Or three.
Or four.
The duo has helped
establish the Trojans as the
predominant force in Class
A girls’ golf, winning four
consecutive titles. Parkston
enters this season in search
of a fifth straight title, which
would match Lead-Deadwood
(2004-08) for the longest title
streak in Class A history.
(Clark/Clark-Willow Lake won
seven straight from 20042010.)
“They won it when they
were younger, and they’ve
worked to continue it,” said
Parkston head coach Tyler
Hockett. “They are both pursuing a golf career in college.
They have a strong passion
for golf, and it’s paid off for
them so far.”
Individually, Bormann has
won three of the past four
state titles, with Weber placing second to her teammate
each of the past two seasons.
For Bormann, a South Dakota State recruit, this season
is a little bittersweet.
“It’s definitely sad that my
six years of varsity golf are
coming to an end,” she said.
“Some of my best memories
are the relationships I’ve
made with my teammates
PARKSTON: Sydney Weber
and coaches, and the opportunities that high school golf
has given to me.”
Besides her titles in 2012,
2014 and 2015, Bormann tied
for third in 2013 and tied
for 21st in 2011. Weber, who
placed second the past two
seasons, she tied for 14th in
2013 and tied for 11th in 2012.
“It’s definitely been a great
run,” said Weber, who will
join former Trojan Jordan
Bormann (Sydney Bormann’s
sister) at Augustana. “It’s sad
that we won’t be teammates
after this season, but I’m
looking forward to this year.
Hopefully it will be the best
one yet.”
Both Bormann and Weber
have had plenty of success
to talk about, but the seniors
have continued to let their
scorecards due the talking.
“They’re just exceptional
young ladies,” Hockett said.
“They let their score, their
game do the talking. It speaks
to their character.”
And while their scores
speak loudly, the pair has not
backed off on their preparation for the season.
“Short game is a big part
of anyone’s game,” Weber
said. “It’s something the team
has really focused on.”
Class A golf requires four
scorers, which means the
Trojans will have to replace
Sierra Stands and Kenzie Lee
from a season ago. Parkston
does return Jayden Bormann
(Sydney Bormann’s cousin),
who tied for 20th last season
as a freshman.
“Jayden Bormann tied for
20th last year,” Hocket said.
“Jadee Mattheis (So.) played
in a few events last year.
Tylee Neugebauer (So.) has a
solid upside.”
One change this season
was the later start date. Practices could not begin until
March 29, and state is not
scheduled until June 6-7, two
weeks later than it has been
in the past.
Hockett sees the schedule
as a bonus for both him as a
teacher and for the golfers.
“The seniors graduate on
May 14. They’ll be all done
and be able to play with a
more free mind,” he said.
“We’ll have a solid three and
a half weeks (without school)
PARKSTON: Sydney Bormann
before state, instead of missing school as a teacher and
students scrambling to get
work made up.”
While golf isn’t always
the most visible high school
sport, the Trojans have
drawn plenty of attention
in Parkston, according to
Hockett.
“There is plenty of community buzz,” he said. “They
are looked up to by everyone
around here. They support
the girls big time.”
The team has plenty
of support, but does not
necessarily feel pressure to
continue its title run.

“I don’t think we feel a
lot of pressure,” Bormann
said. “It’s more about going
out, playing, doing the best
you can and accepting the
outcome.”
While the Trojans don’t
feel the pressure, they do
have high expectations again
this season.
“We’re all hoping to come
out with another state championship,” Weber said. “We’re
going to make it a fun season
and enjoy the run.”
