Plitzuweit named
LONG OVERDUE
South Dakota women’s
SERIES HOSTS
basketball coach
AUTHOR JERRY
WILSON
VERMILLION, S.D.—University of South Dakota athletic
director David Herbster has announced the hiring of Dawn
Plitzuweit as the 10th women’s basketball head coach in
program history.
Plitzuweit (PLITTS-zoo-white) will be formally introduced
at a press conference on Monday, April 25, at 11 a.m. in the
Muenster University Center pit lounge on the USD campus.
Herbster and Plitzuweit will not be available for comment
until that time.
Plitzuweit has compiled a 188-93 record for a winning percentage of .669 in nine years as a head coach. She has guided
programs to 19 winning seasons in 21 years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I and Division II levels including
10 NCAA tournament appearances.
As a head coach, Plitzuweit led her teams to eight postseason appearances highlighted by a 2006 NCAA Division II
Championship at Grand Valley State. She also guided Northern Kentucky through the NCAA Division I transition with four
consecutive WBI berths.
Plitzuweit began her coaching career at her alma mater,
Michigan Tech, under her collegiate coach, Kevin Borseth, in
1995. The pair teamed up for 11 seasons with stops at Michigan Tech, Green Bay and Michigan.
A 1995 graduate of Michigan Tech, Plitzuweit earned backto-back Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player
of the Year awards, four all-conference honors and three
all-defensive team nods. She led the Huskies to a 99-22 record
and four trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. She was
a Division II Bulletin second-team All-America selection and
a two-time Kodak All-America honorable mention pick (1994,
1995). She earned WBCA All-Academic accolades in 1994 and
1995 and was named Michigan’s NCAA Woman of the Year in
1995.
A native of West Bend, Wis., Plitzuweit and her husband,
Jay, have a son, A.J., and a daughter, Lexi.

Author Jerry Wilson will return to the Edith B. Siegrist
Vermillion Public Library to share his work, including reading
from his new novel Across the Cimarron, on Tuesday, April
26th, at 7 pm.
Across the Cimarron takes readers back to the Land Run
days of Oklahoma. The novel is historically accurate, culturally sensitive, and based in part on stories passed down from
the author’s grandparents. The novel explores through fiction
the contested meanings of the settlement of Oklahoma, the
lives of white, black and Native Americans in Oklahoma Territory and early Oklahoma, and the struggle for a place to call
home.
Jerry Wilson was born west of the Cimarron River in
Oklahoma, near the homesteads two of his great grandfathers
claimed in the 1892 Run into Cheyenne Arapaho land. His family worked a marginal sandy farm in a neighborhood of hardup blacks and whites. He worked as a farmhand, a handyman,
a gas station attendant, an oil field flunkey, a carpenter and a
preacher. After two years in the Army and three years teaching in public schools he earned a PhD in English from the
University of Oklahoma. He taught literature and writing at
colleges and universities in Oklahoma and South Dakota before stints as a newspaper journalist and as managing editor
of South Dakota Magazine.
Wilson is the author of three other books: Blackjacks &
Blue Devils, a collection of Oklahoma stories (Mongrel Empire
Press, 2011); Waiting for Coyote’s Call: An Eco-memoir from
the Missouri River Bluff (South Dakota Historical Society
Press, 2008); and American Artery: A Pan American Journey
(Pine Hill Press, 2000).
The Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library is located at
18 Church Street in Vermillion. For more information call the
Library at 605-677-7060.
New Degrees and Certificates
Add to USD Offerings
VERMILLION — Recent Board of Regents approval of two
new majors in the University of South Dakota Beacom School
of Business add to its offerings in the growing areas of new
business ventures creation and business analytics. Regents
also approved several new certificate programs in other
study areas at USD.
Starting this fall, USD’s business school will offer bachelor
of business administration degrees in innovation & entrepreneurship and operational analytics. “Both degrees were created to address growing market demand and will have a huge
impact on the state in economic development and workforce
development,” said Venky Venkatachalam, Ph.D., dean of the
Beacom School of Business.
The regents also approved new certificate programs in
laboratory science, museum and archives studies, reading
interventionist and regulatory affairs. Certificate programs
usually require fewer credit hours to complete than a minor.
They are developed by packaging a small set of courses that
allow students to develop expertise within a focused area of
study, addressing identified market and workforce development needs.
