Importance of Keeping Records for Filing Taxes
BROOKINGS, S.D. - With the March 3, 2017 tax deadline
looming for South Dakota's farmers and ranchers, there is
no time to waste in gathering the important information
and documents Uncle Sam requires.
"While most people must file taxes by April 15, 2017,
farmers' and ranchers' tax deadline is more than a month
earlier. In general, the law does not require any specific
record-keeping system, with a few exceptions, a producer
can choose any kind of record keeping system they wish to
use for their business," explained Jack Davis, SDSU Extension Crops Business Management Field Specialist.
Davis listed off several system options producers can
choose from, including: Quicken, QuickBooks, Easy Farm,
paper ledger, paper journal etc.
Record Keeping Options to Consider
"Although the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the
Farm Financial Standards Council encourages an accrual
accounting method for record keeping, producers however
can also use cash," Davis said.
The record keeping system a producer selects should
include a summary of all business transactions.
"It is imperative producers also keep supporting documents such as purchases, sales, payroll, invoices and other
transactions taking place in their business," explained Shannon Sand, SDSU Extension Livestock Business Management
Field Specialist. "It is important to keep these documents
because they support the entries listed in journals, ledgers
and tax returns."
Sand added that producers need to keep these records
for three years from when the tax return was filed - however, some records may need to be kept longer.
Beyond Taxes
Davis and Sand both said there are benefits to keeping records beyond taxes. For example, accurate records
provide producers with a way to monitor the progress of
their business.
"Records show whether the business is improving,
which items are profitable and what may need to be
changed," Sand said. "Records also help producers keep
track of deductible expenses, as there may be many
throughout the year. If you simply try to recount them all at
tax prep time, it may be quite might be difficult."
Good record keeping makes preparing tax returns easier
and supports items reported on tax returns.

Connecting Native American
Youth to Ag Careers
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Crazy Horse Memorial and the Indian
University of North America was the location for the first Linking
Native American Youth to Ag Careers Conference. Organized by
South Dakota 4-H, the conference was designed to help connect
Native American youth to their roots.
"Our nation's first farmers, hunters and gatherers were Native
Americans. Today, many Native American youth are no longer connected to the land through agriculture," explained Ron Frederick,
SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisor - Rosebud. "We hope
that through this conference we can link Native American youth
back to their roots in the land, the language and the culture."
Seventeen youth from the Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations
attended the conference which was held in October.
Linking Native American Youth to Ag Careers Conference
exposed youth to opportunities found within the diverse world
of agricultural careers through on site group tours and a college
classroom atmosphere. It provided youth with an opportunity to
experience dorm life; taught them about what can be produced
and provided from the land, and gave them an opportunity to
learn more about their cultural heritage through a presentation by
famed Lakota history professor, Duane Hollow Horn Bear.
Hollow Horn Bear told the Lakota Creation story and explained
why the Black Hills remain sacred to the Lakota people.
Other speakers and chaperones included Brad Keiser, 4-H
Youth Program Advisor for Custer and Fall River Counties; Aminah
Hassoun, 4-H Youth Program Advisor, Pine Ridge Extension Office;
Jason Schoch, and Rachel Lindvall, SDSU Extension field staff;
Deanna Eagle Feather; Rosebud Extension Volunteer; Ann Wilson

Gov. Daugaard Signs
First Bill Of The Session
PIERRE, S.D. – Gov.
Dennis Daugaard on Feb. 1
signed the first bill of the
2017 Legislative Session into
law. The piece of legislation,
House Bill 1006, clarifies the
timeline for posting notices
for public meetings.
In 2016, the Legislature
passed a bill requiring
notices to be posted two
intervening days prior to a
meeting. HB 1006 clarifies
the language by requiring
notices to be posted three
days before a meeting. The
bill sets the same deadline
for the submission of comments on rules.
Also on Feb. 1, the
governor signed two other
bills into law: Senate Bill 8,
an act to codify legislation
enacted in 2016, and Senate
Bill 16, an act to revise certain provisions regarding a
