Solving the Real Problem
By Daris Howard
Kevin came up to my desk after class.
“Professor Howard, may I talk to you?”
“Sure,” I answered. “What would you like
to talk about?”
“I want to wait until everyone else is
gone?” he whispered.
I nodded, and erased the board and did a
few other cleanup tasks as we waited. My class
had just finished a test review. I provide questions that the students are to complete and
bring to class. They then go over them in groups
to make sure they understand everything.
Once the other students had vacated
the room, I sat on the edge of the desk. “So,
Kevin, what can I help you with?”
“I’m sorry to keep you after class,” Kevin
replied, “but I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s
feelings if they overheard me. I just wanted
to say that I just can’t work with my group.”
“Personality conflict?” I asked.
That was usually the reason students gave
for wanting to change groups. It was often
caused by a boy and a girl in the group dating
and something going wrong in their relationship.
Kevin shook his head. “No. It’s just that
they’re so stupid I can’t stand it. I know all of
the answers, and they don’t get the math at
all. They’re no help to me.”
“If you know the material, can’t you help
them?” I asked.
He shook his head. “I don’t work well
with stupid people.”
I was a little taken aback by all of this. I
have had students previously who thought
they were too smart to work with others, but
I had never had anyone be so blunt about it.
“Is there any group you would like to be
part of?” I asked.
Kevin shook his head. “Frankly, as I listened to all of the groups around me, I realized that they’re all stupid. I would be better
off doing it on my own.”
I paused at his arrogance, but I have
learned that someone who doesn’t want to
work with others shouldn’t be forced to—
not for the sake of the person, but for the
sake of the other group members. It causes
too much disharmony.
“If that’s how you feel, you don’t have to
work with a group on the next review.”
He thanked me and left. I shook my head
in disbelief. I thought about it a minute, and
then noted the names of each member of his
group so I could check their scores.
A couple of days later, after the test
closed, I logged in to check grades. The class
average was seventy-four percent. Every
one of the other members of Kevin’s group
scored even higher, receiving A’s and B’s. I
assumed Kevin must have done really well,
but when I looked at his grade, I was surprised. He had scored a sixty-two percent.
I said nothing to him, but when I announced the class average, I did see Kevin
ask his group members how they did. When
they responded, his expression was priceless.
On the next test, he didn’t work with his
group. Once again, the class average was in
the seventies, and Kevin’s group members received A’s and B’s. Kevin scored a sixty-percent.
He asked me how his group members did, but I
couldn’t legally tell him, so he asked them.
After class, Kevin came up to see me.
“Professor Howard, do you know what I
scored on my two tests?” I nodded, so he
continued. “I thought it had to be a fluke for
my group members to get A’s and B’s when
I got a sixty-two. I decided they must have
drug me down. But it happened again without them. What should I do?”
“I would suggest you study with your
group,” I replied. “A smart person knows
that he can learn something from everyone.”
Kevin nodded, and the next time we did a
review, Kevin was actively participating with
his group. His test ended up being a B. He
stayed after class the next day to talk to me.
He just smiled and said six words. “A
smart person learns from others.”
Kevin had learned something even more
important than math.
Blood Donations Needed
USD Wellness Center will host a community blood drive on Thursday, March 30 from
10:00 am to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
All blood donations will directly benefit the
local blood supply and patients in need at
Sanford Vermillion Medical Center.
“Donating blood on the Community
Blood Bank’s bloodmobile directly impacts
the Vermillion community’s blood supply,”
states Ken Versteeg, executive director,
Community Blood Bank. “With one blood
donation, on the bloodmobile, you can save
up to three patients. Consider keeping your
donation local and impact patients in need
when we come to USD Wellness Center.”
Donors must be at least 17 years old
(16 years old with a signed parent consent
form found at www.cbblifeblood.org), weigh
110 pounds or more and be in good general
health the day of the donation. Please bring
an ID with you. It is recommended that you
eat and drink plenty of fluids before donating blood. It only takes 30 to 35 minutes to
donate with Community Blood Bank.
Community Blood Bank is the sole provider of blood and blood products to 34 local
area hospitals, including Sanford Vermillion
Medical Center. Walk-ins are always welcome.
Community Blood Bank is not affiliated with
other blood bank organizations and takes pride
in being a self-sufficient organization, thanks to
the generosity of our local blood donors.
Need Help With a Federal Agency?
Give Us a Call
By Senator Mike Rounds
In the United States Senate, much of our
time is focused on crafting and debating legislation, attending committee meetings and
making sure federal policies are working for
South Dakota families. But we also spend a
great deal of time helping South Dakotans
who are having difficulties dealing with
a federal agency. It is a lesser-known but
equally-important service that allows us to
act as a liaison between you and the federal
government. Washington is so broken and
our federal bureaucracy has grown so large
that individual needs of American citizens
are too often lost in a sea of red tape. Our
goal is to work with federal agencies to
identify your issue and fix it.
Over the past two years, working with
the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) on
behalf of South Dakota veterans has been
the most common situation we’re asked to
help with. We have assisted countless South
Dakota veterans navigate the Veterans
Choice Act and other VA programs here in
South Dakota, while simultaneously seeking
changes to federal policy that will improve
the care they receive under the current
law. We also work frequently with the VA
to obtain overdue medals and awards for
veterans and their families. I have been able
to present a few of those medals to South
Dakota veterans firsthand as I’ve traveled
around the state. It is a very special honor
to recognize these vets, with their family
and friends in attendance, and say thank
you to them for their service to our country.
In addition to helping veterans get
the benefits and services they have been
promised, we have also been able to bring
families together by helping individuals get
visas or expedited passports. We also help
people access social security benefits, file
tax returns, work with the Indian Health
Service (IHS) and make sure that federal
agencies are treating citizens fairly and with
the respect and attention they deserve. I
am very proud of the work we are doing to
help South Dakotans who feel like they have
been left behind by the federal government
and have nowhere else to turn.
Our South Dakota offices are located in
Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City and Aberdeen.
Our staff members who handle casework
are available every week day, either in person, by phone or by email. You can find the
contact information for our offices on my
website, www.rounds.senate.gov. My team
works closely together across the state and
in Washington, and we strive to provide a
timely response to everyone who contacts
us, particularly if it is an urgent matter in
which we are able to intervene.
We take our work on behalf of South Dakotans very seriously, and I am pleased that
we’ve been able to help so many constituents already since setting up our office two
years ago. Please don’t hesitate to contact
us if you are experiencing difficulty dealing
with a federal agency. We are here to help.
