6 Broadcaster Press September 4, 2018 www.broadcasteronline.com Gov. Daugaard Proclaims September Attendance Awareness Month PIERRE, S.D. – The 2018-19 school year is underway, and Gov. Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed September Attendance Awareness Month. “Time out of school is learning lost,” said Mary Stadick Smith, interim secretary of the South Dakota Department of Education. “All it takes is missing 10 percent of a school year to negatively impact student achievement. That equates to just two or three days of school per month. With that in mind, I encourage school districts, communities and families to examine their local school attendance rates and work together to get and keep those rates high.” The South Dakota Department of Education has been working to raise awareness about the importance of regular attendance through outreach to schools and other stakeholders. Research indicates that by sixth grade, chronic absenteeism is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping out, and by ninth grade, good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than 8th grade test scores. More information about the importance of consistent school attendance is available at http://attendanceworks.org. Free Class Offered For Those Considering A Home Purchase The Center for Financial Resources’ (CFR) free Homebuyer Express class is open to anyone considering a home purchase or already in the purchase process. Topics include: personal money management; credit history review; mortgage financing and the loan process; shopping for a home; homeowner responsibilities; and predatory lending awareness. Considering the cost and level of commitment, purchasing a new home can be a daunting proposition, particularly for those buying for their first time. Through education and conversation, Homebuyer Express often alleviates many fears over the process and better readies buyers for their purchase. Homebuyer Express is free and open to the public. The LSS Center for Financial Resources’ Homebuyer Express series is made possible through a grant from the SDHDA Homeownership Education Resource Organization (H.E.R.O.). H.E.R.O. Certificates of Completion are issued to participants after attending both parts 1 and 2. Required for some loan types and down payment assistance programs, the certificate may also qualify individuals for closing cost credits.
