Here’s Why You Need A Will,
And How To Get One
By Chris Hogan
We all want to do nice things for
our loved ones. We go on family trips
and celebrate life's wins together. It's
sometimes difficult for us to consider
the bad things that can happen in
life, but we still have to be prepared.
That's why having a will is so important!
Not having a will in place leaves
room for arguments among your loved
ones and anyone else who might
pop up wanting a piece of your stuff.
That’s not okay! The last thing you
want to do is add more stress to their
lives after you’re gone. This is your
legacy we’re talking about here. Do
you want to leave that to chance?
Protecting your wealth—and your
family—with a will is one of the best
gifts you can leave to those you love.
And with August being National Makea-Will Month, there’s no better time to
get yours done.
What exactly is a will, and why is it
important to have one?
Your grieving family members
won’t automatically know what you
wanted them to do with your money
or your stuff—you need to tell them.
That’s where your will comes in.
A will basically establishes a plan
for how your stuff is distributed after
you die. It’s your way of saying exactly
who gets what and what goes where—
and getting it down in writing.
According to a recent survey conducted by Ramsey Research, almost
three out of four parents with kids
(74%) don’t have a will in place. That’s
a big problem!
How do you make a will?
Yanking out a sheet of paper and
scribbling “My family gets all my stuff”
isn’t going to cut it. But making a will
really isn’t that hard. And in most
cases, you don’t even need to go to an
expensive lawyer to get one done.
Here are seven quick steps that will
help you create a will that sticks:
1. Decide what to include in your
will. This includes a list of your savings and investment accounts, plus
the paperwork for your home and any
other real estate you own. You also
might want to include valuable possessions, like jewelry or cars.
2. Select your beneficiaries. Now
you’ll get to decide how your stuff is
split up and who gets what. Maybe
you want half of your assets to go to
your surviving spouse while the other
half is split evenly between your kids.
Whatever it is, get it in writing!
3. Choose an executor for your will.
The executor is the person who will
read the will and make sure that your
wishes explained in the will are carried out.

Boosts Leadership Skills
and Civic Engagement
Through 4-H Citizenship
Washington Focus
Leadership & Personal Development Project
Learning about political processes in the vibrant,
living classroom of the nation’s capital, 38 South Dakota 4-H youth participated in Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF), an intensive 4-H civic engagement
program for high school youth. The program was
held at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy
Chase, Md., on June 15-23.
“The overall experience was incredible. I made
lifelong friends and learned valuable lessons from
our nation’s capital. The memories I made on this
trip are unforgettable and have deepened my appreciation for United States history,” said Laura Bogue
of Lincoln County.
For more than 50 years, the National 4-H Conference Center has invited thousands of youth from
across the country to travel to Washington, D.C., and
participate in civic workshops, committees and field
trips before returning home to make positive changes in their own communities. CWF not only strengthens youth’s understanding of the government’s civic
process, but it also boosts their leadership skills,
communication skills and overall confidence.
During CWF, youth get a behind-the-scenes look at
the nation’s capital while meeting with members of
Congress to learn more about how their government
works. At the end of the program, youth draft stepby-step action plans to address important issues in
their communities.
“CWF was so much fun, from making new lifetime
friends, to learning about historical events, government and our country," said Taryn Opdahl of Hamlin
County.
The South Dakota 4-H contact for information
about CWF is Amanda Stade, SDSU Extension 4-H
Events Management Coordinator (605-688-4167).

4. Name guardians for your children. If you have young children, you
need to decide who will take care of
them after you’re gone.
5. Sign your will in front of witnesses. Don’t forget this step! A written
will is not valid unless it’s signed and
dated by the one writing the will, notarized by a notary public, and signed
by two witnesses.
6. Let everyone know beforehand.
Your will shouldn’t be a mystery
novel. Do yourself a favor and read
your will to your beneficiaries before
you’re gone. Taking away the element
of surprise could save a lot of headaches for them later on.
7. Store your will someplace safe.
Make sure you put your will, along
with other important documents,
someplace that is waterproof, fireproof and accessible for loved ones to
find. I personally have a wooden box
of folders that contains my will and
all related documents, filed nicely in a
safe place where my family can easily
reach it.
And if you need a helpful guide, this
will preparation checklist can help
you decide what you need to have in
your will before you create one.
Don’t wait another day to get your
will!
Once you’ve really thought through
what you want to include in your will,
(StatePoint) A new school year
means new classes, new teachers
and new schedules. At home, you
can riff on this theme with new
books to be enjoyed outside the
classroom, that spark interest in
different subjects. To open doors
for young minds, consider the following titles:
• Crafty coding: For kids with a
potential interest in computers and
coding, consider “How to Be a Coder.” Breaking down the principles
of coding into bite-sized chunks, it
will get them thinking like computer scientists in no time. Learn
about loops by making a friendship
bracelet, find out about programming by planning a scavenger hunt,
and discover how functions work
with paper fortune tellers. Children
can then use their new knowledge
to code by following instructions
to build programs in Scratch 3.0.
• Inspiring true stories: In “DK
Life Stories: Jane Goodall” kids can
discover the inspiring story of Jane
Goodall, a pioneer of primatology whose groundbreaking work
changed the way we understand
animals and ourselves. When she
embarked on her career, women
were discouraged from conducting
scientific research, especially when
that work meant living side by side
with wild animals. A self-taught
scientist, Goodall bravely ventured
into the bush of Tanzania to discover the secret world of chimpanzees. This new biography series for
kids from DK goes beyond basic
facts to tell true-life stories of history’s most interesting people.
• Edible science: Cooking is
chemistry, and all 20 science
experiments inside “Science You
Can Eat,” are edible and fun. Young
minds can find out why popcorn go
“pop,” explore how taste is affected
by smell, then discover the secret
to making the perfect cookie. Examining interesting ingredients and
exciting eating, as well as peeking
into the future of food, kids will get
a better understanding of what's
happening with food and why.
• A global celebration: Young
readers of “Celebrations Around
the World” will embark on an
exciting journey through the most
interesting and important festivals,
celebrations and holidays enjoyed
by people all
over the globe.
