3 Things Your Marriage
Needs This Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is coming! Prepare yourself for an
onslaught of Instagram posts
featuring bright flowers, sparkling jewelry, and oversized
teddy bears. Your feed is
about to get #blessed. If you
get to know me for more than
10 seconds, you know that’s
not what I’m about. Heck, my
husband isn’t even on social
media. And I’m okay with that.
Rachael
One study wanted to find
out if couples who post excessively about each other are actually
happier in their relationships. Spoiler alert: They’re not!
The study found “over-the-top displays are being used
to compensate for weaker relationships.”1 This doesn’t
mean you don’t love your husband if you talk about how
wonderful he is on social media. Hopefully, you and your
spouse affirm each other daily and in person.
But when I think about the healthiest couples I know,
they’re not the ones posting about each other 24/7.
They’re also not worried about what other people think,
so they’re not buying more stuff to impress people (just
so they can post about it). They’re secure in their lives,
but not because of an expensive lifestyle that they can
flaunt. Instead, the couples I look up to have one thing in
common—they’re all intentional in their marriages.
A strong marriage doesn’t happen by chance. If you
want to be intentional and make your spouse feel really
secure, work together on these three areas:
Set goals together
A 2017 study by Ramsey Solutions revealed that 94%
of couples who describe their marriages as “great” also
say they discuss money goals together. Getting on the
same page financially with your spouse is one of the

best things you can do for your marriage. If you need
some help reconnecting and realigning the goals of your
relationship, check out this episode of The Rachel Cruze
Show. You’ll learn about money mistakes that can ruin
your relationship, and practical ways to communicate
and work better together.
Be willing to have tough conversations
My friend, Dr. Les Parrott, says conflict is the price
we pay for a deeper level of intimacy. You can disagree,
and still make space to hear each other. Hashing it out,
putting in the work, and coming from a place of understanding will only make you stronger. And by the way, I’m
a huge fan of counseling for every marriage, not just the
ones in crisis mode.
Don’t compare your marriage to someone else’s
Comparison will steal your joy and frustrate your
spouse. Too many people let Instagram-level expectations form their values and family priorities. I’ve been
there, too, and I know it’s an empty and endless battle
trying to keep up. Spend that time and energy focusing
on all the things you truly love about your spouse, and
the life you’ve already built together.
Flowers will die, and jewelry will tarnish. But a relationship built on these three principles will make your
marriage a blessing, not just #blessed.

South Dakota PUC Issues First Permit For
Construction Of A Large-Scale Solar Facility
PIERRE, S.D. – The
South Dakota Public
Utilities Commission
approved a construction
permit for the Lookout
Solar Project, a solar
generation facility in
Oglala Lakota County
capable of generating
up to 110 megawatts
of electricity, at their
regular meeting in Pierre
yesterday, Feb. 3.
Lookout Solar and PUC
staff filed a settlement
stipulation with the
commission in December
of 2019. Commissioners
discussed the joint
proposal at their meeting
on Dec. 10, 2019. Finding
that several issues
remained, the commission
deferred action on the
docket to a later date.
Following this deferral,
PUC staff worked with
the company to address
commissioner concerns
and submitted a revised
settlement stipulation in
January 2020.
The revised agreement
specified 37 conditions
that must be adhered to
during the construction
and operation of the
project. Land restoration,
habitats of threatened
and endangered
species, cultural
resources reporting,
decommissioning,
avian and bat mortality,
and prairie grouse lek
surveying are among the
details the conditions
addressed. Additionally,
the commission voted
to include a condition
requiring the company to
submit the landowners’
lease agreement approved
by the Bureau of Indian
Affairs to the Commission
prior to commercial
operation.
“This project contains
many unique components.
As a result, our permit
contains conditions that
are equally unique,” said
Chairman Gary Hanson.
“With every siting permit
the PUC issues, we aim
to include protections
for South Dakota citizens
and their property. In this
case, the property on
which this project will be
built is individually-owned
Indian trust land. The
Bureau of Indian Affairs
provides an additional
layer of oversight for
the project and an extra
layer of protection for
landowners.”

University Of South Dakota
To Celebrate The 2nd Annual
Unite For USD Giving Day
On Feb. 12 & 13
VERMILLION, S.D.?–?The
University of South Dakota
will kick off its second
annual Unite for USD giving
day on Wednesday, Feb. 12
at 10:57 a.m.
Unite for USD is an
online and on-campus
event designed to unite
all members of the Coyote
community in support of
high-impact programs on
campus. In recognition of
1862, the year USD was
founded, the giving day
will span for 1,862 minutes
from Feb. 12 at 10:57 a.m.
to Feb. 13 at 6 p.m.
Last year, 853 gifts were
received during Unite for
USD totaling $238,730.
“Unite for USD is a
celebration that allows us
to connect with the entire
Coyote community locally
and across the globe and
provides opportunities to
make an impact here on
campus, said President
Sheila K. Gestring. “With a
variety of initiatives across
the university, every
contributor can give to the
area that is most important
to them. Every gift makes
an impact, no matter the
size, and is what continues
to propel our university
forward.”
The kick-off event
takes place Wednesday
morning at 10:57 a.m. in
the Muenster University
Center Pit Lounge. It is
open to the public. Charlie
Coyote and USD Cheer will
perform, guest speakers
will discuss the purpose
of Unite for USD and
students will be given the
opportunity to participate
in a “Price is Right”
activity for a chance to
raise money for Charlie’s
Cupboard, one of the
priority initiatives of this
year’s giving day.
During halftime of the
USD Men’s Basketball
against Western Illinois
on Wednesday at 7 p.m.,
the Coyote community
is invited to join USD’s
Head Football Coach
Bob Nielson as he leads
the crowd in a collective
coyote howl. Hoping for
a large crowd, USD will
attempt to break a world
record for most people to
howl at once.
“The celebration and
howl at halftime are both
great representations of
what Unite for USD is all
about,” said Hailie Warren,
USD’s public relations
officer. “Getting the Coyote
community together to
celebrate all that USD has
to offer and combining
our efforts to continue
moving forward is how we
continue to succeed in all
areas across campus.”

THE ANNUAL SPRING LOAD LIMITS will go into effect in the near
future on Clay County roads. Limits will be enforced as posted. We ask
for your cooperation at this critical time of the year. Studies show that
roads lose over 60% of their strength during the spring thaw. Research by
the South Dakota D.O.T. claims road damage by one legally loaded truck
causes as much damage as 9,600 cars. One truck with 20% overload
causes as much damage as 19,200 cars. You can be assured, we will not
have the load restrictions in effect any longer than necessary to protect
the large investment you have in your County Highway System.
There will be no overwidth or overweight
permits issued during this period.
