Make-A-Wish® South Dakota Celebrates Valentine’s Day
Questions
The Granting Of Its 1,500th Wish
Sioux Falls, SD – Make-A-Wish®
South Dakota has been granting
wishes for children with critical
illnesses since 1984. On Feb. 11 in
Brookings, the chapter celebrated
the granting of its historic 1,500th
wish come true, a milestone the
chapter crossed when it granted
seven-year-old Ryker’s wish to
meet NHL goalie, Tuukka Rask of
the Boston Bruins.
The 1,500th wish was official
when wish kid Ryker returned
from Boston on Jan. 5. During the
1,500th wish celebration, Ryker
and his family shared stories from
his wish, including highlights of
the two Boston Bruins games
they attended, Ryker’s celebrity
meeting and skate on the ice with
Tuukka Rask, and their interaction
with the entire Bruins team, from
the players to the highest levels of
management.
Tuesday’s celebration
highlighted the significance of the
chapter’s 1,500th wish, and its
vision to grant the wish of every
eligible child.
“We are overjoyed to celebrate
the impact Make-A-Wish has had
on 1,508 kids, their families and
our communities over the past 35
years in South Dakota,” Sue Salter,
president and CEO of Make-A-Wish
South Dakota said. “Wishes bring
out the best in everyone, giving
children and their families hope,
strength and joy when they need
it most. Today we celebrate all
the wishes that have come true
thanks to the volunteers, generous
donors, boards and staff, and all
those wishes yet to come.”

My roommate, John, drove the rest of us crazy. He was
always burning something when he cooked, and most
of the time he just cooked beans. In addition, his diet of
beans made him a veritable methane volcano, continually
spewing forth toxic gas.
Whether it was cooking, destroying the bathroom, or
just generally messing up the apartment, he had a masterful talent akin to the god of chaos. But John had one big
thing going for him that I definitely didn’t have. He was really good looking. Not that I thought he was, but the girls
sure did. They swooned around him so much that it made
a person sick, or, in my case, maybe a bit jealous, especially with Valentines’ Day coming up.
Valentines’ Day was on a Saturday, and that was the
day of the girl’s preference dance. Since it wasn’t common
for a girl to ask a guy out in those days, the preference
dance was the one time they could show a guy that they
really liked him by being the one to initiate the invite.
The campus population was fifty-six percent female,
so statistically, every guy had a good chance. There were
a few girls I liked, and I really hoped one of them would
ask me. Of course, all nine of us guys in the apartment
had similar hopes, so in mid-January we created an apartDrivers 1335
