Grey Sox win get chance at tourney berth By Parker Knox Sportswriter Embarrassed in their opener in the District 7B tournament last week, the Vermillion Grey Sox fought back in the losers' bracket Sunday, dominating Beresford, 11-2, to move within one win of still earning a spot in next week's state "B" amateur tournament in Mitchell. The Grey Sox were to play the Akron Rebels on Wednesday night with the winner advancing to the state tournament. Jumping out to a 7-0 lead with two runs in the second and five in the third, the Grey Sox cruised to their win over Beresford behind starter Cody Schreiber and reliever Tyler Johnson, who combined for 10 strikeouts. Schreiber pitched till the seventh with Johnson finishing the game. The Grey Sox increased their lead to 10-1 with a three-run fifth inning. They had 19 hits off three Beresford hurlers, including a 4-for-4 performance from Mike Moran. He had a home run among his four hits and drove in five runs. Reid Meierkort and Grant Lueders each hit safely three times. Michael Jensen had two hits for the Blues, who managed only four other hits off Schreiber and Johnson. Farmers asked to avoid irrigation overspray onto state highways For safety reasons, the South Dakota Department of Transportation is asking farmers to try to keep their field irrigation systems from spraying water onto state highways. Irrigation overspray can cause a dangerous driving situation for motorists by creating a slippery road surface and limiting visibility for drivers. Such conditions can be especially dangerous for motorcyclists who may unexpectedly get hit with a spray of water – leading to potentially serious or fatal accidents. The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is approaching, and the number of bikers on South Dakota roads will be much higher than normal for the next several weeks. Boaters’ sobriety will be checked The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks reminds boaters to have a safe and enjoyable summer on the water. To ensure safe boating, operators should monitor their alcoholic beverage intake and have a designated boat operator. SDGF&P will be conducting sobriety checks throughout the month of July on lakes, streams, and rivers. SDGF&P urges boaters to have a fun summer on the water and be safe at the same time. Vermillion U12 baseball finishes strong Vermillion U12 baseball finishes the season on a high note with a second place finish in the 16-team Brookings Tournament (July 13-15) by defeating Elkton, Sioux Falls Cyclones, and Sioux Falls SWAT Blackshirts, and then losing in the championship game to the Sioux Falls Grizzlies 10-7. The following week Vermillion U12 baseball entered the VFW A division State Tournament which took place in Sioux Falls. The A division consisted of 14 teams.
