Johnson thrilled with role at National Music Museum Spotlight On By Travis Gulbrandson travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk.net Before he became director of the National Music Museum (NMM) in Vermillion, Dr. Cleveland Johnson had been away from the field for some time. Although trained as a musicologist and having served as dean of the School of Music at Greencastle, Indiana’s DePauw University, Cleveland had most recently worked as executive director of the Thomas J. Watson Foundation in New York City. “It was a private family foundation involved in educational fellowships or travel fellowships for graduate and college students,” Johnson said. “That took me completely away from music. I was involved in very, very diverse fields of knowledge there, which was very interesting. But I was kind of seeing my career steering away from music. But then this came up and kind of sucked me back in. “It’s thrilling. I’m having a great time,” he said. “I’m having a great time.” Johnson’s official start date was Nov. 1, 2012, although he said he’s “still getting all the details” of what his role requires. “A position like this will probably take at least a year to cycle through, because every month brings something new,” he said. “There’s a certain seasonal nature to what goes on here. Summers are our heaviest period for visitation, winters are when our visitation drops off, but Book to bring NMM to larger audience By Travis Gulbrandson travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk. net The collection at the National Music Museum (NMM) in Vermillion is known by scholars throughout the world, but thanks to an upcoming book it may become more familiar to the casual music fan, as well. From Feb. 4-11, photographers representing Dorling Kindersley Publishing took pictures of more than 100 of the museum’s holdings for a volume to be called, “The Story of Music.” “It’s great exposure for us,” said Dr. Cleveland Johnson, NMM director. “We habitually share pictures of our instruments. That’s something that we do all the time, and always have. But most of the publications that we have worked with in the past are academic publications.” Usually, this means a scholar from a very specialized field is seeking very specialized pictures, Johnson said. “We’re talking about academic books that have print runs of maybe 300500,” he said. “They’re very specialized, and end up in academic libraries or the shelves of other specialists.” By comparison, the DK volume could have a print run of up to 19,000, Johnson said. “It’s a much bigger audience for our instruments, so obviously, it’s a great opportunity to get our instruments out there and to get our name out there,” he said. Based in the United Kingdom, DK specializes in illustrated reference books for people of all ages, including the Eyewitness Travel series. “Their books kind of center around the images … so you really go from image to image, and you have very informative, easy-to-read captions,” Johnson said. “They’re not academic in any sense. They’re really for a general audience.” The relationship between the NMM and DK began through an email exchange with the museum’s senior curator, Dr. Peggy Banks, when the publisher requested an opportunity to photograph a small set of instruments. “I was very, very excited when I heard about that,” Johnson said. “My kids grew up with the DK Eyewitness books, and I was thinking, ‘Wow, how n NMM, Page 07 NOTO E OF A N IC N F AL TICE ONUANMEETING NUAL MEETING Bethel Tow w ilho l i l d tsa n n u a lm nship eeti g a t 2 n :0 0 Tu esd a y,M a r ch 5 ,20 pm , a t the W a k 13 o n d a Legi o n H a l,W Bi sw ilbe a d l cc l a ko n d a epted f rsn o ,SD . o w r m o va , e a m a i ten a n ce l gr vela n d r a d o n .
