Broadcaster Press 05 January 7, 2014 www.broadcasteronline.com Reminder for late season deer hunters PIERRE – Deer hunters who have unfilled antlerless deer tags for the East and West River Deer Seasons will have nine additional days available to harvest antlerless deer beginning Dec. 28 and ending on Jan. 5. South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Terrestrial Chief Tom Kirschenmann said the change was in effect last season as well. “Our offices have taken many calls asking about unfilled ‘any deer’ tags. Prior to last year, ‘any deer’ tags converted to ‘antlerless’ tags for these last nine days of the season,” Kirschenmann said. “That is no longer the case. Only unfilled ‘antlerless’ tags are valid during this time frame.” The changes were made in 2012 as part of deer herd management objectives to direct additional antlerless harvest in the areas of the state that need it most while curtailing the doe harvest where deer populations are at or below population objectives. These changes will also apply to the Archery and Muzzleloader Seasons as well. Only unfilled ‘any antlerless deer’ tags are valid from January 115. For specific information on the respective deer seasons, visit http://gfp.sd.gov/hunting/biggame/deer/default.aspx. Veteran’s Holiday Drive through Jan. 15 Join the Department of South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) and Miss Siouxland in providing a comfortable holiday season and New Year’s to our veterans and military families. You can drop off relief items through Jan. 15 at The Broadcaster/Plain Talk, 201 W. Cherry St., Vermillion or Berakhah House, 400 N. Western Ave., Sioux Falls. If you are wishing to support The American Legion Post 15 Veterans Build – South Dakota Homeless Housing Fund, mail your contribution to American Legion Post 15, 1701 Legion Drive Sioux Falls, SD 57106. The school systems or youth organizations raising the most in relief items will receive a telescoping flagpole and USA Flag. For further information, e-mail Autumn.Simunek@gmail.com. The financial portion of the project is a partnership with the EQIP Program and is intended to help clean up the waters of the Vermillion River. The two main conservation practices used by the project to assist in achieving this goal are Animal Waste Management Systems and Riparian Area Management.
