Siegrist Vermillion Public Library is adult services specialist. To many people in the community, however, she’s simply known as “the book lady.” “Sometimes, it’s hard for people to remember my name. I’ll be at the grocery store, and my husband will be with me, and people will say, ‘oh, there’s the book lady!’” Linda serves as a lifeline for Vermillion people who love to read or need access to materials from the city library, but are unable to make it to the building on their own. “I have over 40 different patrons on my outreach route, with approximately 75 deliveries per month,” she said. “The service is just for those who live in the city limits. It’s for those who are homebound, or unable to come to the library.” This service has been provided free of charge by the library for over three decades now. Two local women precede Linda as the library’s adult services specialist – Mary Berglin and Sarah Hanson. Linda took over the role in March 2005. There are a number of ways Linda helps local people get connected with reading material from the library. At times, she notices when a person who has managed to visit the library is having problems negotiating the shelves and finding the desired books. There are also several places in Vermillion where she makes regular stops, both delivering books and picking up materials that are ready to be returned to the library – assisted living, the care center, Dakota Gardens, Town Square, 1101 and several individual homes. “A lot of times at the facilities, I’ll learn that they have a new resident,” Linda said. “People will call, and they’ll say they would like to receive materials. And, sometimes people may have just had surgery and they can’t leave their homes – it might be a temporary thing – but most of the time, it’s a permanent thing.” She admits that at times it is difficult to judge what types of reading material individuals desire. “My job is to find things that they like, and I’ll try to ask people if they want regular print, or large print, and what genre of book that they like,” Linda said. “I’ll ask them who their favorite authors are. It is challenging to personally select books or the right materials for everyone. “But my efforts are rewarding, because once I get to know a person, I’ll bring books and they are so excited because it’s exactly what they want,” she said. “You know that it fits them. I tailor them (selections) to the individual.” Linda said her job constantly teaches her something new about the literary world. “I’m always learning about new books,” she said. “You think you’ve heard them all, but … people will ask me for different things, and then I’ll have to go on a search for books.” Part of her job is researching the materials that are available locally. If they aren’t among the collections of the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library, it may mean making a request for an interlibrary loan. Linda loads books and other materials in bins, and places those bins in carts that she places in her vehicle to deliver to Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, 995 N. There’s not really a slow time, though. And it kind of goes on an individual basis.” Besides delivering books, Linda brings people magazines, music CDs, and movies. “Whatever we don’t have, I try to get through an interlibrary loan,” she said. Linda also utilizes a government program that provides Braille and talking books. “I’ve always been fascinated by the fact that you can materials like that from the government. I never realized that I would be So much care working with that someday,” she said. “In order to be in that program, you have to be unable to read or use standard print materials as the result of a temporary or permanent visual impairment or physical limitation. “For instance, I have people who have a hard time lifting a book, or if you are in bed, it is hard for some to read a book,” Linda said. “It really does make a difference.” The state provides the players and the book cartridges. When individuals are done listening to a book, there is a card on the outside of the cartridge they may simply turn over, affix into place, and drop in the mail to be sent back to the state at no cost to the user. Linda said that when she was a child, her mother would often visit the sick or the elderly in hospitals and nursing homes. Many times, Linda and her four siblings accompanied her. “I don’t feel uncomfortable like some people do about visiting people who have some health problems,” she said. “Some people don’t feel comfortable in that situation, and I’m not that way. Different experiences that I’ve had have prepared me for what I do today. “I feel like my visits provide encouragement to others, and it’s uplifting to me, as well,” Linda said. “It’s really a sense of satisfaction when I can find books that people really want to read. I just feel like what I do is a blessing to people, and they appreciate the service that the library provides. This job is kind of my dream job – I just really enjoy talking about books with people.” CORNERSTONE CHURCH: A Place To Grow: Located at the corner of Crawford & Cherry St. Celebration Service: Sunday during the School year 9:00am and 10:30am (subject to change during holidays) in the summer Sunday 10 AM.
