Robert Colvin, former Broadcaster
Press publisher, remembered
A longtime Vermillion
resident, former publisher
of The Broadcaster Press,
and father of Grammyaward winning singer and
songwriter Shawn Colvin
has passed away.
Robert H. Colvin,
whose grandfather owned
and edited the Vermillion
Plain Talk more than a
century ago, died April 1 in
Austin, TX. He was 83.
“Everyone who knew
him in Vermillion and
thereafter would remark
upon his humor,” his son,
Geoff Colvin, said in a
phone interview, “and the
fact that he was always
finding ways to be funny in
a good-natured way.
“He just had a spark
that led him to do these
things – there are countless
stories, but everyone will
remember that; everyone
who knew him will remark
upon that. It was a
wonderful thing because it
just made people feel good.
It was something that
lightened their day and I
think that has had an affect
on all of us.”
Geoff also remembers
while growing up in
Vermillion that there was
“always music in the house.
“I think of my sister in
particular, but all of us
were influenced by the fact
that he loved music. He
taught himself to play the
piano, and the guitar, and
the banjo,” he said. “He had
a beautiful voice, and our
mother also has a beautiful
voice, and they were
enthusiastic singers and
were always in choirs and
choruses.
“The idea of being
surrounded by music and
of performing was
something we all grew up
with,” Geoff said. “For
most of us, the singing was
in the (United)
Congregational Church
and Jack Noble was the
organist and choir master.
It really had an influence
on all of us.”
Robert Colvin was born
in Sioux City, IA, and spent
the first part of his life in
Vermillion, where he grew
up, attended USD, and
owned The Broadcaster
Press, which his father, Bob
Sr., had started. Then, at
age 35 and with four
children, he decided to sell
the business, return to
school, and change his life’s
direction.
Geoff said his father,
who had studied
journalism for three years
but had not received his
degree before taking over
publishing duties at The
Broadcaster Press, decided
to study psychology.
“As far as I can recall, he
sold the business, and then
devoted himself full-time
to school,” Geoff said.
Bob spent the second
half of his career on the
faculty of the Southern
Illinois University School
of Medicine, of which he
was a founder, in
Carbondale, IL. According
to his obituary, he was one
of the school’s most
popular professors, adored
by students who were
grateful for the humor and
energy he brought to
lectures. He had previously
earned his master’s and
Ph.D. degrees in clinical
psychology at SIU. After his
retirement, Bob and his
wife, Barbara, moved to
Austin in 1997.
Today, Geoff is a senior
editor at Fortune Magazine
in New York City. As he
remembers his father, he
can’t help but also recall his
childhood in Vermillion.
“I strongly believe it was
the greatest place to grow
up. As a kid, you spend
almost all of your entire
life outdoors, and those
were the days when
nobody worried too much
about you,” he said. “With
my friends, we just ranged
all over town, doing what
we wanted, getting only
into minor trouble, not
major trouble – I loved all
of it.”
Geoff said he spent a lot
of time at the old
municipal golf course,
where his father, who was
an avid golfer, began
teaching him the sport
when he was 6 years old.

also was one of his favorite
Vermillion hangouts.
“This was the era of hot
lead, and I remember those
machines and the molten
lead,” he said. “I would just
visit and talk to the folks
who were working … I
have to say I loved to visit, I
loved to see how the work
was done – how all of the
ads would come in and be
photographed under these
incredibly bright lights.
“I remember when my
father got a big, big offset
press. It was big for 1964,”
Geoff said, “and that was a
major day when that got
brought into the building.”
To say that Bob Colvin
lived a full life perhaps is
an understatement, as his
obituary notes his many
passions and
accomplishments.
He built a canoe, a cabin
cruiser that he kept on
Lewis and Clark Lake, a
vacation home in the
mountains of New Mexico,
and furniture that fills his
home and the homes of his
children. He published a
book and many scholarly
articles.
He was an avid pheasant
hunter and an enthusiastic
swimmer, handball player,
cyclist, skier, and sailor. He
