VERMILLION POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS BRIEFING 04/09/14 14:23 – Fraud Alert: A caller reported she was contacted on Facebook by a subject claiming to be a military person deploying to Syria. The subject claimed they were not being provided all the equipment that was needed and asked for donation. The caller provided funds via Western Union and received an e-mail from a fictitious General thanking her and asking for more. This is a fraud. Beware anyone who contacts you on Facebook, by phone or otherwise. Verify claims before paying any money. These grifters take advantage of good people. 04/09/14 15:20 – While on patrol an officer saw a vehicle parked in a handicapped parking space without a handicap designator. The driver returned to the vehicle and was not handicapped. She was cited. 04/09/14 16:11 – Caller reported a subject Buy Local! contacted her through an online service that she had an active restraining order against. Under review by state’s attorney for possible charging. 04/09/14 20:10 – Officers responded to vehicle vs. bicycle accident. The vehicle had stopped on the sidewalk before entering the roadway and had not seen the bicyclist who struck the side of the vehicle. The bicyclist suffered minor injuries. 04/09/14 22:44 – Complainant reported that when she went to file her taxes she found someone had claimed her child as a deduction already. She was referred to the IRS offices in either Sioux City or Sioux Falls to find out who had made the claim. 04/10/14 01:50 – An officer saw a man urinating in the downtown area. The man was cited. 04/10/14 02:00 – Officers responded to a fight outside a local bar. One of the subjects was arrested for simple assault after investigation revealed the victim and witness indicated the subject punched the victim, and the victim had swelling where the punch was reported to have landed. 04/10/14 17:27 – Complainant reported someone had made several unauthorized purchases on her credit card. There was information regarding the location the items were sent to. Under investigation. 04/10/14 20:06 – Caller reported repeated unwanted text messages regarding a dispute over children calling the subject, “crazy.” Officers spoke to both parties and established boundaries and consequences. 04/10/14 21:38 – Caller reported her daughter was approached while walking by an unknown man who told her to get into his vehicle. A bike patrol officer located the man and contacted him. He denied he was stealing anything and allowed a search of his person. No stolen property was found. Investigation continuing. 04/10/14 22:55 – A vehicle was stop for failing to dim headlights as required by law. The driver was suspended and was cited. 04/11/14 16:59 – Caller reported a friend had been assaulted by a live in boyfriend. Investigation revealed an assault had occurred and the boyfriend was arrested for domestic assault. 04/11/14 22:36 – Caller reported a party with underage drinkers and drug use. Officers investigated a found a small party with no evidence of the reported violations. No further action.
