Earth (Every) Day activities
planned for next week
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
The world may be
celebrating Earth Day on
Tuesday, April 22, but
Vermillion plans to do
much more than that,
with planned activities
for the entire week.
The combined energy
and manpower of
organizations that are
involved in both the
University of South
Dakota and the
community will be at the
forefront beginning
Monday as what has been
dubbed Earth (Every)
Day activities kick off
here.
“We’re bringing
Frances Moore Lappé to
campus on Earth Day,”
said Meghann Jarchow,
Ph.D., an assistant
professor of sustainability
at USD. “She’s
internationally known,
she’s best know for
writing ‘Diet for a Small
Planet’ in 1971.”
Lappé will lead a
discussion with USD
students on how to foster
the development of a
living democracy in their
communities. That
discussion is scheduled
for Tuesday, April 22,
from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in
Farber Hall located in
Old Main.
Tuesday evening,
Lappé will present a
lecture based on her book
“EcoMind,” and will field
questions, followed by a
book signing. Her lecture
will begin at 7 p.m. in the
grand ballroom of the
Muenster University
Center on the USD
campus.
Jarchow said her initial
discussions with
members of the
Vermillion community
about Lappé’s visit here
soon mushroomed into
an event involving a wide
cross-section of people.
“I was trying to get cosponsors for her visit, and
the reaction was, ‘oh,
that’s great that she’s
coming to campus,” she
said, describing
community members’
response. “We ended up
having a meeting with
several people from
different organizations
from around the
community and on

campus, and it became
clear that this was way
more than one day’s
worth of activities.
“We decided to do a
variety of things over the
week, and have it
integrate the campus and
the community, and have
it ideally be as inclusive
as possible, and include
whatever organizations
want to be part of it.”
Among the activities
involving a big push from
community volunteers is
a planned city-wide trash
pickup starting with
downtown and
emanating outward.
Michelle Maloney is
helping to spearhead this
effort to brighten up the
city’s appearance.
“It’s always bothered
me, the amount of litter
that seems to
accumulate,” she said. “I
think part of it may be
due to overflowing
recycling bins that allow
things to blow around on
windy days, or in the alley
ways, there may be
animals that rip into
bags.
“I’m sure there may be
some intentional
littering,” she said, “but I
don’t think it’s nearly as
bad as people think it is.
“Either way, it needs to
be addressed, and when
they told me this was
going on, I thought, ‘what
better thing to do to

complement something
like Earth Day than clean
up the community in
which we live. It’s the
perfect time to do it; it’s
right before high school
graduation and the
university graduation.”
It’s also a great way,
Maloney said, to tap into
the combined forces of
organizations that are
active on both the
university campus and
throughout the
Vermillion community.
Volunteers are asked to
gather at a check-in point
located at the downtown
Ratigan Platz beginning
at 3 p.m. Thursday, April
24. They will receive
gloves and sets of garbage
bags (one for plastic, one
for cans, one for the rest)
and then go to their
designated area in the
community to begin
cleanup activities.
City workers and other
volunteers will pick up
full bags from volunteers
periodically and bring
them to the Platz area in
downtown Vermillion,
where Vermillion
Recycling will have
several trucks to
demonstrate the amount
of trash picked up. All
volunteers are then
encouraged to come to
the Platz for the
Thursdays on the Platz
Earth Day event, and a
Downtown Sustainability
Fair.
“I’m interested in
seeing all sectors
helping,” Maloney said.
“I’m interested in high
school students helping,
in teachers helping, in
fraternities and sororities
helping, in service
organizations helping –
in my dream, that’s what
it would look like.
“I would like to see
this happen every year,”
she said.
Earlier in the week, on
Earth Day itself, April 22,
the Sustainability
Program and its
community partners will
feature a Sustainability
Fair for USD students in
the Muenster University
Center from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m.
Students will have an
opportunity to learn
about local
environmental topics and

“Earth (Every) Day
will be an opportunity to
celebrate all of the
progress that we are
making at USD and in the
Vermillion community
toward environmental
conservation,” Jarchow
said. “We will be having
more than 15 events that
include more than 30
organizations on campus
and in the community.
We hope that Earth
(Every) Day 2014 will act
as a catalyst to encourage
people from around the
area to work towards
increasing the
sustainability of their
lives.”
She noted that
activities are even
planned for Monday,
April 28, at the
Washington Street Arts
Center in Vermillion.
“We want to bring
people together at that
time, and explore ways to
take that energy and keep
moving,” Jarchow said.
“The idea is using Earth
Day, and now Earth Week
as an awareness building
thing, but to not have
these activities just stop –
it’s to keep these different
groups that have now
come together jazzed and
to keep the momentum
going, and to make more
progress at doing more
greening things in
Vermillion.”

Maloney also urges
people interested in
volunteering on Thursday
to contact her by calling
her or texting her at (605)
677-9006.
“If I can get 10 teams
of 10 (people), that
would be great,” she said,
adding that she has
already heard from
several USD groups who
plan to have teams of
volunteers for Thursday’s
pick-up activities.
“I also want to get
some community
organizations,” she said,
ranging from service
clubs, to the local Cubs
Scouts chapter. “I’d love
to see people of all ages
pitch in and help.”
Helping sponsor
Thursday’s activities are
Carey’s Bar, the
Vermillion Area Chamber
of Commerce and
Development Company,
Mid-American Energy,
Chae’s, and Wal-Mart.
“I’d like to see this
grow every year … sort of
like the Komen race did,
so that we have teams,
with team names, and we
could have contests to see
who collects the most
garbage, and then have
those activities culminate
with a party every year,”
she said.
