direction, today the
pantry enjoys assistance
from 80-plus volunteers,
filling food boxes, sorting
food, dispensing food
boxes to families, picking
up pizza and bread,
picking up vegetables and
fruit from the local
grocery stores in
Vermillion,” Merrigan
said, “and running
community food drives to
help fill shelves with
sustenance for those in
need in our community.”
For the last quarter
century, she said, Mary
has been busy with a
variety of activities,
ranging from collecting
and organizing food

products, answering emails and phone calls, and
writing budgets, to
producing a monthly
newsletter, training
volunteers, filling out
funding applications, and
sending thank you notes.
“Mary is and has been
the face of the Vermillion
Food Pantry,” Merrigan
said, “That means making
appearances at food drive
efforts, posing for many,
many pictures taken with
donor checks and with
piles of food collected,
attending meetings and
providing updates to
donor organizations,
meeting with USD
students and campus
groups to help increase
the volunteer base – all in
the name of the
Vermillion Food Pantry.”
Merrigan noted that
Mary would point out
that its volunteers have
made the Vermillion Food
Pantry’s accomplishments
possible.
“We all know that is
true – but the important
thing to note is that only
through Mary’s leadership
and direction did the food
pantry volunteer force
grow from three or four,
to 17 teams with a lead
volunteer for each team,
to ensure that all needs of
the pantry operation
would be met with the
leadership of many,” she
said.
In 2013, the Vermillion
Food Pantry fed 5,373
people in Clay County.
“That number has
more than doubled since
2010,” Merrigan said. With
her voice breaking with
emotion, Merrigan added
that Mary’s most
important role over the
years, which comes to her
naturally, is very simple.
“It involves her caring
heart, and her call to
provide for the most basic
human need – hunger,”
she said.
