VERMILLION POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS BRIEFING
04/29/14 21:40 – Caller
reported a car pulling
away from a convenience
store with someone
screaming inside. Officers
located and stopped the
car. They found the
screaming was from a
small child who was upset
at parental direction and
throwing a tantrum. No
further action.
04/29/14 22:50 – Caller
reported receiving death
threats in a phone
message. Officers
investigated and found
there was an ongoing
dispute between the two
parties and both parties
were warned to stop
threatening the other.
04/30/14 02:24 –
Vermillion police assisted
the University Police
Department with a DWI
arrest.
04/30/14 11:14 –
Vermillion police assisted
court services with taking
a juvenile into custody
for transport to a secure
facility.
04/30/14 13:46 – A
caller reported a violation
of a no contact order.
Investigation revealed the
order was no longer in
effect.
04/30/14 19:35 – A
teenager called to report
his father had assaulted
him. Investigation
revealed the force used
was consistent with
normal parental
discipline. The teenager
was advised the father
had acted legally.
04/30/14 21:09 – Caller
reported that someone
had stolen his hard
eyeglass case. He
suspected a roommate
and wanted them
removed from his home.
The eyeglass case was
found in the living room.
The caller was satisfied.
No further action.
05/01/14 00:00 – While
conducting a bar check
officers found a woman
who appeared underage
and was unable to
provide any
identification. The
woman eventually
identified herself and she
was under age and was
cited.
05/01/14 02:08 –
Officers contacted a man
urinating in public and
cited him.
05/01/14 04:22 – Caller
reported a dispute
between parties and
requested that one of the
subjects be found to
ensure he was alright as
he had been very upset
after the dispute. The
subject was found and
was all right. The original
caller had a warrant for
his arrest out of Clay
County.
05/01/14 09:57 – The
department received
information about a
possible drug dealer.
Under investigation.
05/02/14 01:41 – An
officer stopped a car after
seeing poor lane travel
and an out brake light.
The driver was
intoxicated and was
arrested for DWI. The
driver provided a breath
test that showed a breath
alcohol level of .164.
05/02/14 03:57 –
Officers responded to a
report of a domestic
disturbance. Investigation
revealed the man had
been choking the woman
who kicked him to get
him to stop. The man was
arrested for aggravated
domestic assault.
05/02/14 14:39 – Fraud
Wilson Trailer Company – Yankton SD
alert: A local business to
an order for a delivery
that included delivering a
purchased pre-paid card.
The suspect then
requested the activation
number for the pre-paid
card. Later it was
discovered the entire
order had been placed on
a stolen card and the
person to receive the
delivery did not exist.
05/02/14 20:18 – Caller
reported an angry verbal
exchange in a parking lot.
The caller explained that
a month prior she and
another woman had
gotten into a yelling
match regarding the right
to watch television at the
laundromat they were
using at the time. Today
the woman’s husband had
confronted her and
demanded an apology for
the argument a month
ago. No physical exchange
occurred.
05/03/14 01:36 – An
officer attempted to
contact a man who was
walking downtown
drinking from an alcohol
container. The man fled
on foot and a second
officer found him trying
to force his way past two
bar employees trying to
prevent him from
entering the bar. The man
was arrested for minor
possession/consumption
of alcohol, failure to obey
an officer and trespass.
05/03/14 02:04 –
Vermillion officers
assisted University Police
who reported two
subjects fleeing on foot.
The Vermillion officer
located and stopped the
subjects. The University
officer arrived and cited a
subject for underage
consumption.
05/03/14 13:01 –
Officers provided a
funeral escort.
05/03/14 13:38 – Caller
reported a desire to harm
himself. Officers spoke at
length with the subject,
mental health staff and
hospital staff and
arranged for the man to
be cared for.
05/03/14 14:13 – Caller
reported a theft of several
items and they suspect a
tenant who shares the
building. Under
investigation.
05/03/14 19:22 – Caller
reported a hit and run
accident. Investigation
showed the hit and run
driver had not wanted to
have a claim against his
insurance. Officers
explained the law
requiring the
presentation of proof of
insurance when an
accident occurred and the
requirement to stop and
inform the other vehicle
owner of the collision.
Charges were referred.
05/03/14 19:29 –
Officers responded to a
call for help at a
residence. On arrival, an
officer contacted a man
leaving the premises who
stated, “I did it,” and
surrendered.
Investigation revealed an
argument had occurred
between two men with
one angry that the other
had accused him of
stealing. The suspect had
taken the first man to the
ground and choked him
out. Charges of
aggravated assault were
filed.
