Sections of Dakota and
Cherry streets will be
closed early next month
when the University of
South Dakota ties into the
city’s sanitary sewer
system.
The Vermillion City
Council approved two
construction-related
closures at its regular
meeting Monday night.
“USD is starting on a
project that’s going to
greatly improve the
infrastructure on campus,”
explained City Engineer
José Domínguez.
One aspect of this will
involve tying into
Vermillion’s sanitary water

Dakota campus.

June 2-6, depending on
weather conditions.
Domínguez added that
affected Dakota Street
residents will have access to
their homes through the
right-of-way.
The second closure will
be on North University
Street from 500 feet north
of east Cherry to 700 feet
north of east Cherry, and
will last from June 9-13.
According to a council
agenda memo, the street
will be closed because the
sanitary sewer line is in the
middle of the street at close
to 11 feet deep, which will
necessitate the installation
of a new manhole.
“During the street
closure USD will remove a
portion of north University
Street, excavate to the
bottom of the sanitary
sewer pipe, place a new
manhole, cut the exiting
sanitary sewer line and
backfill and pour the
portion of the street that
was removed,” the memo
read.
There will be no cost to
the city as the result of
either closure.
Both closures were
passed unanimously by the
council.
Guest commentary:
Appreciation for SD highways
By Gov. Dennis Daugaard
Being governor means
frequent travel, and in the weeks
since the legislative session
ended, I’ve been doing a lot of
driving around South Dakota.
Spending this time on the road
driving made me appreciate our
good state highways in South
Dakota – something that’s easy
to take for granted.
Maintaining a high-class
highway transportation system is
vitally important to our state’s
economy. Whether it’s a farmer

system.
The first connection
point will be along north
Dakota Street across from
the Akeley-Lawrence
Science Center, and will
involve closing the street
from east Clark to east
Cherry.
“The closure is being
requested due to the
location of the sanitary
sewer manhole and the
depth of the manhole,”
Domínguez said. “The
work … will require that
the entire width of the road
is closed, and all traffic be
able to go around the
closure of the work area. It
provides a safer workspace
for the contractors, as
well.”
The closure will be from
shipping corn, a business looking
to expand here or a family
traveling across the country to
visit South Dakota, the quality of
our roads matters to everyone.
Fortunately, our state highway
revenues have been strong in
recent years. This, combined
with the federal highway funding
we receive each year, has allowed
us to maintain the overall
condition of our state highway
pavements and bridges at or near
historically high levels.
Since I took office, our
pavement conditions have
steadily improved.
Today, more than 90 percent
of our state highway pavements
are currently in good or excellent
condition.
While we should be grateful
for the condition of our
highways, we know that the work
on our roads is never finished.
To keep our roads in good shape
requires constant maintenance
and upkeep.
Though the Department of
Transportation and our partners
in the highway construction
industry play the integral roles,
BE SMART.

South Dakotans also have a part
in maintaining our roads.
We all need to pay attention,
follow speed limits, drive a safe
distance behind others and have
patience. In this way, we can
make highway workers’ jobs a lot
easier and, more importantly,
ensure the safety of the workers,
our passengers and ourselves.
I’m thankful for the work
state employees and construction
workers put into our roads. Let’s
all do our part to keep highway
workers safe this construction
season.
