As of Monday, USD became the temporary home for approximately 385 Girls Staters, who will populate 15 “cities” at the event through Saturday. While enrollment numbers are down a bit due to the event’s proximity to the state high school track meet, Girls State Director Cheryl Hvorka said she is “very impressed” with this year’s group. “Every year I say it’s the best group ever, and I don’t see this year as being any different,” Hvorka told the Plain Talk Thursday afternoon. “We send out information packets, and I have gotten numerous e-mails and phone calls from girls with questions that came out of their packets.” At that time, Hvorka was attending to some last-minute planning. “Right now I’m finalizing the rosters, because we have registration Monday from one to four in the student union,” she said. “The staff actually comes in on Sunday, so right now I’m working on the check-in sheets for counselors, for their cities. … “Otherwise, we’ve got the schedule done, and we’ve got pretty much all our speakers lined up. I’m hoping that we’re ready to go,” she said. Some of the speakers who will be paying a visit to the girls are U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson and Rep. Kristi Noem, who will both attend the general assembly at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Gov. Dennis Daugaard will attend the morning session at 9 a.m. Friday, and Sen. John Thune may be there Saturday morning. Hvorka said the assemblies will be streamed, and later archived on the South Dakota Girls State Web site, http://sites.usd.edu/south -dakota-girls-state/. South Dakota Girls State was founded at Mitchell in 1947, where it met on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University until 1985. It took place at South Dakota State University from then until 2002, when it moved to USD.
