Meet Randy
Gingiss
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
Anyone who has been
a regular audience
member at the annual
performances of the
Vermillion Community
Theatre (VCT) has been
greeted by a familiar face
onstage.
Randy Gingiss, a
recently retired professor
who taught at the
University of South
Dakota School of Law,
has transformed himself
from a campus lecturer to
a new persona on the
stage of the Vermillion
High School Performing
Arts Center nearly every
summer the past decade.
This year is no
exception. Randy is
taking part in the VCT’s
upcoming production of
“Oliver!”
The show runs July 2528, with performances at
7 p.m. on Friday,
Saturday and Monday.
There is a 2:30 p.m.
matinee on Sunday, July
27. Ticket prices are $14
for adults, $7 for students
K-12 and free for children
five and under.
Callie Hisek is the
director, and Anthony
Burbach is the music
director.
“I started nine years
ago with ‘Guys and Dolls.’
That was the first time I
think I had been on a
stage since I was 14 years
old,” Randy said. “I think
it was probably my best
part. I was Arvide
Abernathy, I had a solo
song, and nobody threw
any rotten tomatoes at
me when I was through.
“It’s just been a
newfound joy. It’s an
awful lot of fun, it’s a nice
group of people, and
when the shows are over,
the leads are on the floor
taking the tape off the
stage along with the rest
of us,” he said. “There are
no prima donnas, and
that’s a nice atmosphere.”
Tragic circumstances
surrounding a student at
the USD law school
approximately 10 years
ago led to Randy’s regular
contribution to VCT
musicals.
“We had a student
whose husband had died
of cancer. She wanted to
make a better world for
her boys. In her second
year (of law school), she
comes down with cancer,”
he said.
When it became
apparent that she
wouldn’t survive the
disease, the Student Bar
Association at the law
school held a fundraiser
so that Christmas
presents could be
purchased for her boys.
Law school faculty
members’ names were
placed on jars, and the jar
that received the most
contributions was
deemed the winner.
“I won, and so I sang
karaoke to the student
body,” Randy said. “This
was a cause for which I
was willing to make a fool
of myself … I decided if I
was ever going to be
called to make a fool of
myself again, I was going
to take some voice
lessons, which I took

from Gretchen Burbach.”
Gretchen, the
elementary music teacher
for the Vermillion School
District, and her
husband, Anthony, also
have been active in the
VCT for many years.
“She encouraged me to
audition for ‘Guys and
Dolls,’ and the rest is
history,” he said.
Appropriately, the solo
number Randy sang in
the musical as the
character Arvide
Abernathy also involved
the character Sarah
Brown, who was
portrayed by Gretchen.
“That year, I was
Gretchen’s grandfather,”
he said. “I’ve been
Gretchen’s husband,
father, and grandfather in
different shows.”
Randy’s role as law
professor involved him
standing before an
audience of students as
he gave his lectures.
Appearing on stage in
a musical production is
much different, he said.
“The stage sort of

dreams. Every time I
audition, I figure I’ll put
(Laurence) Olivier to
shame,” Randy said,
smiling, “but you’re
surrounded by nice
people, and everybody is
having fun.”
In the past nine years,
he was unable to
participate in only two of
the VCT’s productions –
“Our Town, and “In Every
Generation.”
“I will keep coming
back as long as I can
remember lines,” Randy
said.
