The National Music
Museum (NMM) is
“Celebrating the Saxes”
through Sept. 2 – not just
the instruments, but the
men who created them.
Twenty-eight
instruments from the
museum’s permanent
collection have been
gathered to highlight the
work of the Sax family,
Adolphe Sax (who
invented the saxophone),
his father Charles-Joseph
and his son Adolphe
Eduard.
Deborah Check
Reeves, curator of
education and
woodwinds at the NMM,
said the exhibit was put
on display in part because
2014 marks the 200th
anniversaries of Adolphe
Sax’s birth, as well as the
invention of the valve for
brass instruments.
“There are
instruments that each one
of the family members
made,” she said. “We’re
kind of tracing a musical
dynasty … and just how
many different things this
one guy came up with.
“We all know the
saxophone, but we just
don’t think about the
other output,” she said.
In addition to the
saxophone, Adolphe Sax
created many other
instruments, including
the saxhorn, the
saxotromba and a
trombone and trumpet
with six independent
valves.
“Those six-valve
instruments are crazy,”
Check Reeves said. “It’s a
neat idea, but (difficult)
in practical use. The
instruments are heavy,
they’re awkward, they
didn’t really survive, but
for a while they were
pretty popular.”
The exhibit also helps
to illustrate the evolution
of the saxophone.
“Even when you look
at the saxophones, you
can see that although it’s
basically the same
instrument that we play
today … there are some
pretty essential
differences,” Check
Reeves said. “Adolphe Sax
saxophones had two
octave keys that were not
automatic, but by the
time his son was making
them, his son had already
adopted an automatic
octave key.”
Some of Sax’s
creations may have been
designed with an eye
toward portability not
seen in some other
instruments, Check
Reeves said.
“I could see it being
used as a substitute for
some of these other
instruments, like the
bassoon,” she said. “Even
if you could (march with
it) you’d never hear it
outside. But with the
saxophone, you could
hear it, so I really think
that it was popular to fill
in some of those missing
parts.”
Although it took
decades for the
saxophone to be accepted
as a legitimate instrument
in the United States,
Check Reeves said Sax’s
instruments did quite
well in Europe.
“Sax had received
contracts from the French
government to make
These are among the instruments now on display as part of the “Celebrating the Saxes”
exhibit at the National Music Museum. The exhibit runs through Sept. 2.

some of these new
instruments just for the
French army bands, and
he got a real boost from
that, obviously. It was
almost like he had
exclusive design rights to
some of these
instruments,” she said.
Creative success didn’t
necessarily translate to
financial success,
however.
“Sax himself was born
in Belgium, and the fact
that he was Belgian didn’t
sit well with a lot of the
other actual French
manufacturers … so he

Even though all the
pieces in the exhibit are

they are not always on

so cool about these
temporary exhibits, is
that we can get some of
the stuff that isn’t

Reeves said.
She added that she
hopes those who come
visit will come away with
an appreciation of the
innovations made by the
Sax family, as well as the
importance of music as a
means of expression.
“We see so many
different ways that have
been developed to
produce music, and that’s
what I find continually
amazing,” she said. “As
long as I’ve been in the
music business, I’m
constantly reminded
about how cool that is.”
