02 Broadcaster Press August 12, 2014 www.broadcasteronline.com From my notebook 1101 Looking Back at the Clay County Fair By David Lias The Clay County Fair has undergone a lot of changes in the nearly 20 years my family has lived here. Some of them have been a bit difficult to watch. It’s apparent that there aren’t as many farm kids, or at least kids interested in what 4-H has to offer, residing in Clay County as there used to be. Our two daughters were both in the prime of their 4-H years when we became Vermillionites, and they soon found a club and became active members. Today, that club doesn’t even exist. You can see it each year. The exhibits in the 4-H building are a bit fewer in number; the livestock shows don’t take as long as they did years ago. There are fewer entries, circling about in a show ring that seems to shrink just a bit each year. I think we’re fooling ourselves, however, if we believe that the fair was somehow easier to plan and manage back in the “good ol’ days” when 4-H exhibitor numbers were higher. It was a challenge back then, and it’s certainly a handful this year for the dedicated members of the fair board who try their best to make sure the event runs smoothly. One of the fair’s newer “attractions,” begun in 2009, is the Miss Clay County Fair Pageant. I liked this idea right from the start – it gives preteen girls in the county a chance to model clothing, demonstrate their talent, and go one-on-one with judges in a private interview before the festivities. The event, naturally, includes a question asked on stage before the audience, too. The pageant was begun to help shake the doldrums that were beginning to set in, as the fairgrounds appeared to be growing quieter and quieter, with fewer kids, fewer parents of those kids, and what appeared to be fewer visitors to the fair a few years back. It has grown to be one of the more popular events at the fair. Will its attendance ever top that of the demolition derby? Probably not. This year’s pageant, it appears, had the best attendance of its brief history, however. That was really good to see. BE SMART. Scan our QR code with your smart phone and discover the Broadcaster Online! It also was expanded this year, to help celebrate South Dakota’s Quasquicentennial – a fancy word for its 125th anniversary. In commemoration of this unique year in state history, a special Quasquicentennial contest was added to the pageant that attracted five participants, each seven years old. The junior princess contestants numbered four; the youngest is 8, the older two are each 10 years old. Five young ladies vied for the princess crown – all of them are 11 years old except for one, who is 12. It’s easy to find articles critical of beauty pageants, and I think a lot of that criticism is warranted. There are some pageants – I’m not saying all – that seem set up a criteria that seem to try to define what a woman is supposed to be. Some of those pageants appear to believe that women need to have a Barbie-doll physique, and tend to diminish the potential all women have to be our next scientists, leaders, and intellectuals. Certainly that’s not what’s happening with the Clay County pageant. The young women active in this event have to be prepared, they have to be a bit quick on their feet, and they’re given an NOW ACCEPTING BIDS FOR NOW ACCEPTING BIDS FOR SNOW REMOVAL SNOW REMOVAL (2014-2015 season) season) for for the St. Agnes School, Church, & St. Agnes Sch ol, Church, cho Parish house! When I was 10 or 11 years old, if you placed me on stage in front of lot of people, stuck a microphone in my face and asked me a question, I’m not sure I’d have been able to say, well, anything. One likely would have heard my knees knocking, and that’s about it. Then again, there was never anything put into place in my home communities that made me believe I’d even have a remote opportunity to do such a thing. Which, when you think about it, is a bit sad. That’s why I’m glad that some local people had the foresight back in 2009 to provide that opportunity for young people here. That’s why I doubt that I’ll be anything but a big fan of the Miss Clay County Fair pageant, and the many princesses and junior princesses it has crowned and will honor over the years. People who pay attention to activities at the fair, and who are in tune to what’s important to our young people, know that the pageant will continue to offer a positive experience to all the young women who chose to participate.
