The music at a small gathering could be heard for several residents away. The subjects turned down the music on request and were warned regarding the City Ordinance and the Aggravated Nuisance Ordinance regarding repeat offenses. 07/27/14 17:22 - Officers responded to a 911 hang up call. The caller had accidentally dialed the number. 07/27/14 21:42 - Officers were called to a report of a man making threatening statements to children. Investigation revealed that the children had been in another person's house eating food and was confronted by the adult resident and the man with they returned to the residence. The children left after being yelled at by the man not to come into the house while the adults were gone. No criminal action occurred. 07/29/14 15:18 - Caller requested officers check the welfare of a toddler after they saw the toddler's mother spank the toddler. The child and mother were contacted. The child appeared healthy and was uninjured. 07/29/14 17:35 - Officers assisted a deputy with a transport to HSC. 07/29/14 19:03 - Caller requested assistance with a verbal dispute between a mother and her adult children. On arrival the children had left after the mother called the police. No criminal offense could be substantiated. 07/30/14 04:19 - Officers responded to medical call of a patient having difficulty breathing and having pain in her chest. Officers provided comfort and care until the ambulance arrived and took over care. 07/30/14 06:45 - Caller reported a teenage child missing. Officers initiated a search for the child and advised surrounding agency. The child was found and was all right. 07/30/14 18:52 - Caller reported a vehicle stolen. Under investigation. 07/30/14 23:36 - Officers stopped a vehicle after witnessing several warning indicators. The driver was intoxicated and was arrested for DWI. 07/31/14 03:33 - Caller reported an unknown man trying the door of a closed business and was concerned he may be trying to break in. Officers contacted the man who was leaning against the business. He said he was not trying to break in but wanted to buy a coffee at the business and had realized it was closed. The man was intoxicated and was underage and was cited. 07/31/14 18:22 - Officers stopped a vehicle after seeing the driver drink from a beer can. The driver had an open beer can and had been drinking. A series of tests determined the driver was under the legal limit. He was cited for open container in a motor vehicle. 07/31/14 23:36 - Caller reported an unknown man approach her and her daughter in their yard and asked if they wanted some “pot.” After being told no, the caller entered her home and noticed the man walking outside the windows in the yard. The police checked the area but were not able to locate the suspect. 07/31/14 23:52 - Unknown caller reported a loud party. Officers responded but were unable to locate any sign of a loud party at the reported location. 1475 08/01/14 02:09 - Caller reported a man and woman fighting inside a nearby residence. Officers responded and separated the two. Investigation revealed the man had assaulted the woman. He was arrested for domestic violence assault. 08/01/14 03:17 - Caller reported a possible violation of a protection order. Investigation resulted in the arrest of the suspect for violating the order. 08/01/14 11:13 - Caller reported a possible sex crime. Under investigation. 08/01/14 19:29 - Officers were called to a dispute between a mother and her adult daughter. Officers spoke to both parties and negotiated an agreement between the two so the arguing would stop. 08/02/14 04:31 - Officers found a vehicle with the driver passed out behind the wheel. The driver was intoxicated and in control of the vehicle. She was arrested for DWI. 08/02/14 14:21 - Caller reported a man had threatened him with a gun. (605)624-8181. 1490 By Alan Dale Over the course of the past 10 days, the Plain Talk website has undergone some subtle, but obvious changes and it hopes to get its readers and curious onlookers involved with the new project. During the recent, near two weeks, the Plain Talk has gone to a daily format online. It may not have the gaudy updates a reader would see at a big city daily, but it is there. Last week, the Vermillion 15-16 Teeners made the state tournament and the Plain Talk had the story up within 90 minutes of the final pitch. This is a plan we now hope to enforce from here on out. Your sons or daughters varsity game ends and the story will be up sooner rather than later. A JV game? Sure, why not. Of course we would need the help of Vermillion High School and University of South Dakota coaches, but so far, their contributions have been spectacular and respected. And they will be rewarded. Local news will be the forefront of our daily content and breaking news or announcements needed by the public to get to the rest of the area will be seen immediately. All the members of Clay County and beyond need to do is contact the Plain Talk (605-624-4429 or alan.dale@plaintalk.net) and something will be done. The Plain Talk isn’t doing this because we think it’s a cool idea, but because, quite frankly, we can do it. Because we can do it, the only ones that will truly benefit from it, will be the readers and advertisers. If a town further beyond our reach, sees the work of the Plain Talk and wants that same attention bestowed upon it, we welcome the requests for coverage to give you the news service needed. With that in mind, if anyone in the surrounding areas of Irene, Wakonda, Meckling or Burbank is interested in getting its news in the Plain Talk, the staff asks anyone interested in being a volunteer correspondent to contact the paper and discuss the possibility of getting a regular communication going with its coverage. We did not intentionally leave out Elk Point and Jefferson but because Bruce and Susan Odson have done and continue to do a great job of covering Elk Point and Jefferson in their newspaper, the Southern Union County Leader Courier, we will leave that to them but plan to work together on things in the near future. The idea is to have weekly updates from your towns and give readers immediate coverage both online daily and in our historic, print edition. The goal is to get better every day, by working even harder than the previous 24 hours. As mentioned last week we want to give the readers the coverage they demand, expect, and deserve. So keep a lookout at www.plaintalk.net. The staff hopes for any and all feedback, good or bad. The only way to get better is to work in conjunction with the readers so the Plain Talk hopes to see the town of Vermillion and the surrounding area jump aboard and give us your news. The first days of the Plain Talk 24/7 Online A little recent history lesson tells us that this all started with mostly updates from sports teams representing the 16 colleges and universities in the state and the immediate region. Included in the paper’s communications are the University of Nebraska, Creighton University, and the University of Nebraska-Omaha. These schools compliment the coverage of South Dakota State, the University of Sioux Falls, and Augustana College to name a few. In addition, updates from a number of regional pro and semi-pro teams have also been going up as the Plain Talk hopes to provide updates from the Vikings, Chiefs, Twins, Royals, T-Wolves, Lynx, and Wild while in the same breath keeping folks up-to-date with the Skyforce, Canaries, and Rush. All sports will be your sports made available by the Plain Talk. All news of local and regional importance? Same thing.
