“Sea of Grass” exhibit opens April 11th
at Timber Lake Museum
Art meets history at Timber Lake on April
11 when the Timber Lake and Area Museum
unveils the “Sea of Grass” art exhibit with
a grand opening, artists’ reception and art
show.
Thirty-eight pieces of original art, created by 24 different artists and reproduced
on 3 by 4 foot canvases, tell the rich history
of the prairie region in this new permanent
exhibit.
Peter Kilian, chairman of the Art Department at Northern State University in Aberdeen, an advisor for the project and one of
the artists, said,”This project is truly an area
partnership in the best sense of the word.
Individuals, communities, businesses, nonprofit, tribal and state organizations all came
together to make the Sea of Grass project a
reality.”
Kilian added, “The Sea of Grass art
project represents a living commitment to
and celebration of community. This unique
gift to the Timber Lake community and
region will educate and inspire residents and
visitors for many years to come - and serves
as a model to other communities about the
power of imagination and vision.”
The title, “Sea of Grass,” originated with
UNA Howe of Dupree, project director.
“My impression of the prairie comes
from the ancient times when the prairie
was an ocean,” Howe explained. “The grass
on the prairie waves at us like waves from
the ocean shores, and makes me think how
we are sharing this landscape today with
ancient fish that once swam in our home we
call the prairie. As we travel on our paved
roads let your imagination go with the idea
that once sea creatures called this landscape
home.”
The project was envisioned years ago by
the late Jim Nelson as a series of mini-murals
to depict the history of Dewey and Corson
counties and the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock reservations. He compiled a list of
historical themes and events, which became
the foundation of the project.
Recruiting of artists began in the spring
of 2014 with grant funding from Cheyenne
River Sioux Tribal Ventures and the South
Dakota Arts Council, which is funded by the
South Dakota Department of Tourism and
Nelson, president of the Timber Lake &
Area Historical Society and Museum. “Most
of the pieces were created especially for
this exhibit but we borrowed a few that we
knew about previously and a couple ‘hidden
treasures’ turned up, including an Eddie Two
the National Endowment for the Arts.
Artists chose their subjects, including
the age of the dinosaurs, Native legends and
stories, Lewis & Clark, homesteading, ranching, rodeo, and others.
“We are pleased to have artists from all
corners of the state and beyond,” said Kathy
Bulls original and a vintage Mick Harrison.”
Besides the 3 x 4 foot canvas prints
suspended from the ceiling, most of the
originals will be displayed at the grand opening and through the summer.
Many of the Sea of Grass artists will show
and sell their other work at the
