2 Broadcaster Press April 7, 2015 www.broadcasteronline.com SCOUTS FIRE AWAY Cancer And Keeping Your House In Order By Richard P Holm, MD . Troop 66 of Vermillion completed the Fire Safety Merit Badge on March 17 at the Fire Training Tower with Vermillion’s Fire Chief Shannon Draper, Captain Matt Taggart, and Firefighters Ryan Husby and Mathew Wanamaker. Draper organized this activity with the Vermillion Fire Department making it possible for scouts to get firsthand experience on how to put out fires with a fire extinguisher. “We are not talking about a little ordinary campfire. This was an intimidating fire that was over 10 feet tall and put off a lot of heat, especially as the scout got close enough to use the fire extinguisher to battle the flames. But with the help of Fire Chief Shannon Draper, each scout that tried was able to extinguish the raging inferno,” said Gene Fuller, Assistant Scoutmaster. This activity is just part of the life skills and values the scouting program provides to our local youth. The scouts learn skills including first aid, swimming, citizenship, personal fitness, and cooking just to name a few. Scouting introduces different careers and opportunities most young men will never experience. In February scouts learned about Engineering at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls. The March campout was held at the Strategic Air & Space Museum to learn about Aviation. If the child of an alumnus is accepted at USD his or her tuition will be at the in-state rate of $138.80 per credit hour rather than the $208.20 per credit hour paid by other out-of-state students. That’s a savings of $79.60 per credit hour, which makes a 120-credit degree program Hartington Tree LLC cost $16,656 instead of $24,984. “If you are already accepted at USD, give me a call at 605-658-6220 or send me an email at mark.petty@usd.edu to see whether you qualify for the child of alumni rate,” said Mark Petty, dean of enrollment. “And if you haven’t considered USD, we’d love to talk to you about getting a great liberal arts education for the same price as a South Dakota resident.” Have a Great Day There is something about that word cancer, the big C. When the pathology report displays those abnormal type cells on biopsy and the report spells out those six black letters, then, whether it is a simple treatable condition or one that will most certainly predict an earlier death, the patient hears cancer and it changes everything. Through the years, I have had to inform too many patients about a new diagnosis of cancer and have learned there is often a paralyzing fear that comes with the word. Due to advancements in science, many more people with cancer are surviving than when I started. Still, when I have had to say to anyone of them, “You have cancer,” often the word cancer is the only word they will remember for days, and TREES FOR SALE EVERGREEN • SHADE • ORNAMENTAL LIBRARY TO HOST SCREENING The Edith B. In a similar vein, I have heard it said that every once in a while, perhaps yearly, we should all have some kind of significant brush with death and then be rescued. Maybe that would help us to get and keep our house in order. And then when each of us has our turn to cross the river into that land of the sweet bye and bye, we can feel what the young neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi, said before dying of cancer, “(I have found a joy)...unknown to me in prior years... a joy that does not hunger for more and more, but rests... satisfied in this time, right now...” We shouldn’t have to come down with cancer to get our house in order. ——— KALANITHI, PAUL, MD. “BEFORE I GO: A STANFORD NEUROSURGEON’S PARTING WISDOM ABOUT LIFE AND TIME.” THE WASHINGTON POST, MARCH 12, 2015. Area Announcements Tri Valley Chorus TREE TRIMMING, REMOVALS & TRANSPLANTING so I always plan to keep readdressing the topic until plans can be clarified. Unfortunately, some people who hear the word cancer come to face their mortality for the very first time, even when the chance of cure is good. I dare say this goes for too many of us, resulting both from unrealistic expectations in this scientifically advanced world, and the cover-up of the dying process in this everything-is-going-to-be-alright society. This week a friend told me she and her husband were preparing to sell their house by thinning out their stuff collected over 15 years, and remodeling with that new carpet they’ve needed for a long time. It reminded me of what a realtor friend once said, that he keeps his house ready for sale at all times. Why not put in the carpet, paint the bedroom, and fix the step so that he can enjoy it right Call Cliff Huot 605-201-9398 Rosalyn Westre Stormo will be celebrating her 85th birthday with an open house on Saturday, April 11th from 1:30-3:30 at the Gathering Room at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.
