Final Updates For High
School Project Set in Stone
By Sarah Wetzel
For the Plain Talk
Plans finalized for the high school
remodel as the school board
decided Monday the extent of the
project based on what they can
afford to complete.
The board was hoping to complete
remodels of the locker rooms
and bathrooms with a lighting
upgrade for the auditorium as
well, however the original quote
added to the other mandatory
remodels exceeded the budget.
Board member Chris Esping
reported that after evaluating
possible changes to the project,
Johnson Controls came back with
adjusted numbers.
“If we were to do some changes
to the restroom remodel the new
cost would be $180,955 instead of
the $287,000 that was originally
proposed,” Esping said. “The
locker room went down from
$576,000 to $381,000 roughly and
then the lighting went down from
$179,000 to $52,900.”
Though considerable savings
are reflected in these numbers,
Esping said that still puts the
total cost of the project over $5.5
million which is more the board
wishes to spend.
“What we are looking at is pulling
out the locker rooms and doing
those down the road,” Esping
said. “That would leave doing the
lighting upgrade and doing the
bathrooms.”
Esping also mentioned that if
the locker rooms were pulled
from the project, it might give
the financial flexibility needed to
spruce up the bathrooms to the
ideal standard.
“Both Doug and I felt that if we
could swing it, it would be much
better to do the full remodel,” she
said. “It will give us more bang
for our money down the road. It
will look completely new. It will
fit the rest of the project that we’re
doing. That is our proposal to go
back to the original cost of the
restrooms of $287,000, remove
the lockers and do the lighting
upgrade.”
With this new change, the board
plans to borrow $4.1 million
and use $1 million from reserves
plus an additional $173,674 in
reserves.
According to Esping, the total
project cost now comes to
$5,273,674.
Board members shared the desire
to complete the bathrooms but
understood the benefits of putting
the bathrooms as priority.
“Getting the bathrooms done
top to bottom, we hope that will
lead to reduced maintenance,”
board member Doug Peterson
said. “Hopefully the students will
take better care of them but also
they’ve had 50 years of life. There
are places where they used to have
in-wall places for trash. Those are
going to have to be dry-walled. It
seems to be a much better option
to redo the whole thing.”
Cutting the locker rooms comes
as another cut to an already
trimmed-down project.
”If you look at the capital outlay
plan, you know we also pulled
out the Austin part,” Esping
said. “That was about a $400,000
project. I don’t want to see the
locker rooms go away. We need
to do those. We’re just going to
have to figure out how and when
and when to also do the Austin
project.
“We talked about we could
certainly do the full project,
however that’s really going to
put us tight in our capital outlay
budget for the next few years
and not give us the flexibility for
anything else that may come up,”
Esping went on to say. “I think we
try to be as fiscally responsible as
possible so it only really makes
sense to pull the locker rooms.
Not that we want to do that. They
are in desperate need of remodel
as well.”
Even though the locker rooms
will not be getting a complete
remodel, they will have some
improvements along with HVAC
upgrades.
“In the original plans for the
locker rooms we were going to
remove a row of lockers to give
the teams a meeting space during
halftime,” Esping said. “They
think that can still possibly be
done with very minimal impact
to the locker room. That is
something they’re also going to
pursue and do.”
The board unanimously approved
the motion to approve the
addendum for the restroom
upgrade, the auditorium upgrade
and tea ducts for the doors in the
chemistry and biology labs.
“After this project our district
is sitting very well with our
buildings,” Esping said. “We have
the HVAC replaced in every
building with the exception of a
couple at Austin. Roofs have been
done on all the buildings. We’re
sitting really good.”
Other Business:
With the final decisions of the
HVAC project made, the school
board approved Monday a revised
resolution on Capital Outlay
Certificates for the high school
project, adding in the amount
of funds to be used being $4.1
million plus $1 million from
reserves plus an additional
$173,674 in reserves.
Superintendent Mark Froke
reported that the Vermillion High
School Hall of Fame ceremony
will be held May 2 at the Old
Lumber Company. Six individuals
have been selected as inductees
this year.
The social event will begin at 5
p.m. with the actual ceremony
at 6.
“That should be a real exciting
evening,” Froke said.
