great things for Vermillion as the director of the city’s parks
and recreation department.
a little closer to home; go
to a community that I felt
was on the upswing,”
Goblirsch said. “It’s got a
lot of good things going
for it, and I wanted to be
part of that.”
The specific
environment that
Vermillion has to offer
was also on Goblirsch’s
mind.
“There was already a
good staff in place and
good people,” Goblirsch
said. “And I always wanted
to live in a small town
with a university.”
“Feb. 25 is my two year
anniversary here,”
Goblirsch said. “I was
brought on to take on
some big projects.”
The bike trail and city

For the Plain Talk
People who possess the
heartbeat of Vermillion
look at the community
from all types of different
angles.
However, the angle that
Jim Goblirsch takes is one
of the most special ones.
He is driven to see the
community grow and
prosper, and keep the
pulse strong.
“Vermillion has a lot of
potential,” Goblirsch said.
“It’s really growing for the
better.”
Goblirsch is focused on
progress, and as the city’s
Director of Parks and
Recreation, he knows how
important progress, and
the opportunities that
come with it, is for
Vermillion’s citizens.
Goblirsch came to
Vermillion after serving
the community of Casper,
WY., and Sioux Falls
before that.
“I have twenty plus
years in the field of parks
and recreation in different
capacities,” Goblirsch said.
“Everywhere was about a
seven year stint for me.
“Then the opportunity
opened up here in
Vermillion.”
Goblirsch was excited
at the prospect of moving
to Vermillion, not only
because it was closer to his
family than his previous
post, but because he saw
the community as a great
place to be.
“We wanted to be back

overseeing, but there are
plenty of other projects in
the pipeline that keep him
busy. Voters took to the
polls last Nov. to approve
the new Prentis Park plan
and pool.
“We are working on a
revamped walking and
bike path system where we
can open more of it up
again,” Goblirsch said.
“The pool is a fifty plus
year old pool, so that’s
something that we need to
focus on. We’re also
putting in more parking
lots and new pathways
and basketball courts, and
that’s really what day to
day life consists of right
now is planning for those
big projects we’ve got
going on.”
Another large
accomplishment that has
come to light during
Goblirsch’s time with the
city has been automating
sign-up for all of the
activities offered for both
adults and youth through
the City of Vermillion
Parks and Recreation
Department.
