Broadcaster Press 11 January 27, 2015 www.broadcasteronline.com n HEART From Page 03 two days in the spring to sign up for your summer classes and that was kind of an archaic system,” Goblirsch said. “But we are fully integrated in that now you can register for your kids’ soccer, basketball, all of those things, online. People don’t have to take off of work to come down and sign up.” Helping the Parks and Recreation department grasp technology has also streamlined operations at The Bluffs Golf Course, which is also run by the city. Tee times are available online as well as smart device applications and GPS while players are on the green. Projects such as the ones the city is currently undertaking must be well thought out and executed correctly. Goblirsch makes sure that projects on such a large scale are not taken lightly, and often confers with similar departments across the state to get ideas and opinions. The city is positioned to come through with these plans and proposals. “Fortunately we’ve got good people here at the city with our engineering department and light and power department and street department,” Goblirsch said. “We are a small staff here with the city but really everybody helps out the parks and rec department to help get some of these things done.” In the future, Goblirsch would like to see Vermillion expand in the number of facilities it has to offer. “We’re a community right now where we don’t have our own facilities,” Goblirsch said. “We have to do our adult programming for sports at the High School, and we share the armory.” While the High School staff are very accommodating to the Parks and Recreation Department as well as the National Guard Armory members, it would eventually be advantageous for citizens to have a place solely for the purpose of their own activities. “I think the community would really benefit from a community center,” Goblirsch said. “Maybe a gymnasium, a small workout area, a place for seniors to gather; just a true multi-purpose community and recreation center.” Goblirsch also spends time working towards obtaining grants and other funding avenues that are critical to Vermillion’s recreation system. While grant funding is available, it is often a challenge to acquire. While not spending time at City Hall, Goblirsch spends time with his family, watching his kids participate in youth athletics and meeting new people around town. “You’re not an outsider and we really enjoy living in Vermillion,” Goblirsch said. “We are avid USD fans now; it’s been a neat place for us. We enjoy it.” Goblirsch and his family are eager to take in what Vermillion has to offer, while giving back to the community as well. The Goblirsch family enjoys seeing the local theatre productions and participating in various sports. “I think the rest of South Dakota needs to be aware that Vermillion is going to be a bigger player in the bigger picture, not just in parks and rec but also at the University and with athletics there.” Goblirsch said. “There is a lot going on downtown, it’s a neat community. “I think Vermillion is an undiscovered gem in South Dakota.” IMMEDIAT IMMEDIATE OPENINGS ATE OAKWOOD APARTMENTS A SHERIFF REPORT SUNDAY, JAN. 11 12:42 p.m. — A deputy assisted a driver who had run out of gas in Vermillion. 12:49 p.m. — A deputy responded along with EMS to a medical emergency at a rural residence. 2:04 p.m. — A woman was transported from Wakonda to the Human Services Center in Yankton for an involuntary mental health committal.
