ALAN DALE / THE PLAIN TALK “When we walked out of that first classroom I can’t tell who is more excited, my team or the second graders we were in there with,” Williams said. “They are excited to see all these young people in our community and those who kind of look up to our girls. It’s a special feeling to be in that position and to be able to experience that.” Galvin said that reading for a lot of minutes is great, but what should make the experience better is getting a true grasp of what is read. “We ask what was something new they have learned and what were some new words that they learned,” Galvin said. “We are instilling that and how it connects to their real life. The kids are getting more comfortable talking about books.” PA FRA PAT FRAZEE PAT FRAZEE AT AZEE AZ DALESBURG BAPTIST CHURCH 30503 466th Ave., Beresford, Pastor Darren Regehr. 9:45am, Sunday School; 11:00am, Morning Worship; Mid-week Services Wednesdays, 7:00pm. We are pleased to announce that for the th year in a row, members of Vermillion Federal Credit Union have received patronage dividends and interest rebates. The Board of Directors voted for the bonuses as a way to say “thank you” to credit union members for the opportunity to help them with their ?nances. The Board of Directors gave back some of this year’s success to its members because they own the credit union and any success is because of them. No one knows what the future holds for rebates and extra dividends in the years to come, but at least for this year members again have a little extra in their accounts. Happy Holidays! Along with the help of the University of South Dakota athletic department, the school has joined with the university to create a “One Team, One Dream” partnership. Here, the athletes of the USD men’s and women’s basketball teams have aided with the encouragement of the young students to read for a “million minutes.” To date, Galvin believes the students have tabulated over 300,000 minutes of reading outside of school during this academic calendar. The hope is to reach a million by April 1. “Where this all took up is the state of South Dakota challenged each kid to read 20 minutes (outside of school daily) and what we did was create a motivational model with the partnership with the basketball teams to motivate the kids to read more,” Galvin said. “This is us, no one else is doing this. It hasn’t caught on yet. It’s pretty remarkable. I was telling (women’s basketball head coach Amy Williams) that everywhere I go kids are talking about books. It changes the whole culture of the whole environment. Kids are really proud of themselves and the books and series that they’ve read.” Galvin believes that the relationship between the students and the USD athletes has only further fueled the fire of the Jolley readers. “The partnership is really critical and the fun part is the athletic department has come on full board,” Galvin said. “They send athletes over every Thursday and coach kids to read. The kids know they are being held accountable.” Williams and her entire team were able to visit Jolley last Thursday with classes being out for the fall semester and the team gearing up for a game later that evening. The team went around visiting with various groups of students and talked about the various BLESSED TERESA OF CALCUTTA CATHOLIC CHURCH 995 N. Sioux Point Road, Dakota Dunes, SD.
