It was past meeting
present, the standard
bearer now speaking to
those he one day hopes to
carry the torch for future
America.
South Dakota governor
Dennis Daugaard (R)
took time out to visit the
Vermillion High School
senior class Friday
morning to talk about
their current educational
lives, their later ones, and
the benefits of staying in
state once they enter
adulthood.
A total of just under 25
minutes was dedicated to
talking to the soon-to-be
Class of 2015 graduates as
Daugaard spoke for most
of the meeting, but asked
a number of questions to
engage the students.
The visit was part of an
itinerary that included a
visit of the Builders’
Choice incubator on the
school’s campus (see
related story) and taking
in of Dakota Days.
“I think it’s important
to ask questions so they
are intellectually engaged
rather than just talk,” the
governor said after his
meeting with the
students. “Go around the
room and keep them
engaged. I enjoy that. At
first no one wants to
answer and then after a
while they aren’t afraid to
answer and get into it. It’s
just nice to see kids think
about their future.”
Daugaard is also
cognizant of what the

current generations face
because kids are kids.
“When you are that age
you have your mind set of
the world and they tend
to have, still in their lives,
their parents are taking
care of things for them,”
he said. “Suddenly they
are on the brink of having
to take care of all those
things themselves. I don’t
think they realize the
change it is and how it
can very easily get them
down a path were they
aren’t succeeded. Before
they know it they are
upside-down.
“So you try to get them
to be aware of that before
they go down paths like
that.”
He told the seniors in
the high school
auditorium that the state
is one they should
consider staying in when
they begin their futures in
the workforce because of
the lower utilities, rent,
food, and most
importantly, “it’s a hungry
job market.”
“Businesses don’t
worry about taxes,
because taxes are very
low, and businesses like
that,” the governor told
the students. “We have a
low income tax and that’s
a rare thing. Also costs are
very low.”
It must be working
because South Dakota has
the second lowest
employment rate (3.6
percent) in the nation

But the still everpresent problem is the
ability to match
businesses with people
who can do the job and
vice versa.
“You are a business
coming in with all these
advantages, but you need
a work force,” Daugaard
said. “There are people
looking for work, in
Vermillion today, but the
difference is what are the
skillsets those people may
have versus the skills sets
employers are looking for.
Our problem is a shortage
of workforce and a
shortage of skill sets with
people who are looking
for work.”
