South Dakota announces 2016 track and field schedule
VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota director
of track and field/cross country Lucky Huber
has announced a 2016 schedule featuring
three home meets and trips to Big Ten, Big
12, and Pac-12 schools.
South Dakota opens the 2016 season
inside the DakotaDome as alumni return for
the Dakota Realty Alumni Meet on Jan. 16.
The two other home meets on the schedule will be held at the new outdoor track
facility. Fans can get a first look at the new facility at the USD Twilight on April 19, prior to
the Coyotes hosting the 2016 Summit League
Outdoor Championships May 12-14.
The Coyotes remain within the Midwest
for most of the indoor season, including a
pair of meets at in-state rival South Dakota
State, Minnesota’s Jack Johnson Classic, the
Iowa State Classic, a trip to Colorado for the
Air Force Team Challenge, and a tune-up
at Nebraska in preparation for the Summit
League.
The Yotes will look to capture Summit
League titles for the fourth-straight year on
the men’s side and for the first time on the
women’s side at the Summit League Indoor
Championships hosted by Fort Wayne, Feb.
26-27.
Indoor competition wraps up March
11-12 at the NCAA Indoor Championships
hosted by Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. The top-16 individuals in their
respective events qualify for the meet.

Christmas At The Capitol
A column by Gov. Dennis Daugaard:
South Dakotans have always known how to make
Christmas special. In 1881 the people of Aberdeen decided
to celebrate the holiday season by putting up a community
Christmas tree. The locals thought the tree would be a nice
way to commemorate their first Christmas as a community.
All was going according to plan until the railroad agent who
had been commissioned to supply the community’s Christmas tree showed up with a disappointing delivery. He arrived
with a tree that was a measly five feet tall.
Determined to build a more extravagant display, the
people of the town gathered in a local store at the corner
of Third and Main. They found a large piece of timber and
nailed it to the floor and ceiling. Then they attached narrow
strips of wood and pieces of evergreen from the real tree to
the large piece of timber. They topped off their clever construction with strings of popcorn and cranberries. Thanks to
their imagination, the Aberdeen community ended up with a
much larger, grander tree than the original.
One hundred thirty-four years later, another group of
South Dakotans has been using their creativity to build a
special Christmas display. The decorations are slightly more
elaborate than the ones in that Aberdeen store. The Capitol
display consists of nearly 100 trees – the tallest of which is 29
feet – and the theme for the decorations this year is “Christmas around the World.”
Many volunteers have devoted precious hours to decorate the Capitol building for the holidays. As always, they
have done a great job.
When I walk into the Capitol building each morning from
now until after Christmas Day, I’ll be greeted by the rich
aroma of pine trees and the sparkling reflection of Christmas
lights on the ornaments that decorate those trees. Just walking down the hallway puts me in the Christmas spirit.
I hope you will find time this holiday season to come to
Pierre to experience Christmas at the Capitol. The display is
open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the week through
Saturday, Dec. 26.
I hope to see you there!
Fontanini
Bethlehem Village
on Display at
Mount Marty
College
YANKTON, SD – November 25, 2015 – A stunning
Fontanini Bethlehem Village
consisting of more than 400
pieces will be on display
beginning November 30
through the Advent season.
The village can be viewed
in the MMC Boardroom,
located in the Scholastica
Learning Center (SLC). Viewing will be open from 2:006:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30
through Friday, Dec. 4 and
Monday, Dec. 7 through Friday, Dec. 18, with the Friday
showings ending at 5:00 p.m.
Special Saturday viewings
will also be available on
December 5, 12 and 19 from
1:00-4:00 p.m. The public is
welcome to view the village
at no cost.
Over ten years ago, the
Fontanini Bethlehem Village
was donated to the College
by Father Terry Weber of
the Sioux Falls Diocese. The
whole village took volunteers just over 40 hours to
complete the set up. This
year’s display will consist
of a guided tour through
key points in the Christmas
story.
“This is much more than
a nativity scene,” says Director of Campus Ministry, Sr.
Maribeth Wentzlaff. “This
is a depiction of what life
in Bethlehem would have
looked like at the time of
Jesus’s birth. It is an opportunity for the people in
the community to further
understand what it was like
during another period of
time and reality.”
For more information on
the village or to arrange for
a group visit please contact
Mount Marty College Events
Coordinator, Wyatt Yager at
