This year's award winners are Sophia Dudley and Jonathan Rosales, who were selected from a talented pool of candidates. Sophia (Sophi) has several academic honors, including several awards, at the state and national level, for the Scholastic Art and Writing Competitions in 2015 and 2016. Sophi also earned two Gold Medals at the SDHSAA State Art Contest for 2016. She is active in debate, One-Act Plays and a crew member for Spring musical. Sophi has been a volunteer at Heartland Humane Society and at Messy Hands Summer Art Camp. Her teacher noted that, in addition to her hard work ethic and inclusiveness, Sophi "loves the creative process and consistently seeks new ways to express herself." She plans to attend the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in the fall. Sophi is the daughter of Judy Zwolak and John Dudley. Jonathan is active in football, soccer, track, and cross-country. He was named to the Academic All-State team and was a finalist at the 2015 South Dakota State Track Meet. Jonathan attended Boys State and was a member of student council. He spent summers volunteering his services to landscape at The Main Street Center. One of his teachers writes that Jonathan "is a kind, respectful student, in- volved in extra-curricular [activities], does well in school and would be a worthy recipient." He plans to study business at the University of Iowa in the fall. Jonathan is the son of Bernie and Patricia LeCates. Two annual $1,000 scholarships are awarded by the Edith Siegrist Charitable Trust through the Vermillion Public Schools Foundation.
